Dedicated to his late uncle, emotional rapper Rod Waves sixth studio album Last Lap is another collection of heartbroken melodies, yearning hooks, sad piano loops, and just enough pop lift to keep the entire thing from falling into utter despair. Wave continues his habit of releasing long projects; this one has 23 songs and a 67-minute run-time focused on songs of loss, social anxiety, and emotional pain. The best of the bunch includes the dreamy sadness of "25," the bouncy romance of "Passport Junkie," and "Fuck Fame," which took Lil Baby and Lil Yachty into the booth to add some Auto-Tuned melancholy to Rods already glum sound. Most of the tracks here rise to the standards of quality established on previous albums, but thats kind of the problem with Last Lap. Rod Waves formula has proven successful enough to land many of his records at the top of the charts (this one debuted at number two), but hes done very little to expand on his sound or differentiate one song or album from the next. For those already won over by his feelings-heavy, sulky trap sound, Last Lap offers another hour of sad-hearted enjoyment. For anyone who feels this unchanging approach has been wearing thin, this album might serve as a breaking point. ~ TiVo Staff
