BurialとKode9による『Fabriclive 100』でフックアップされ、アフリカン・ダンスの最深部ともいえるクドゥロをベースとしたサウンドを探求するアンゴラの鬼才Nazarが〈Hyperdub〉より2ndアルバムをリリース!

前作『Guerrilla』の後、深刻な病気を経て、今作『Demilitarize』は死と向き合うこと、そして新たな愛の芽生えから生まれたものだという。また、Nazar本人は本作のインスピレーションとして『攻殻機動隊』の世界観が核になっていると語っている。多層的に蠢くサブベース、旋回するSFシンセ、そして前作同様、クドゥーロのリズムは聴こえてくるが、ダンス・ミュージックの機能性は控えめな、ヴォーカルが引き立つよう解体された形で取り入れられている。タイトルが示す通り最もソフトなサウンドを展開するM9「Heal」は必聴!

エリザベス・フレイザー、アーサー・ラッセルそしてフランク・オーシャンといったアーティストにも通ずるドリーミーでメランコリックなムードが作品全体を通して漂う問題作が完成!

Nazars intensely political music reflects his familys experience of fleeing Angola during its 27-year civil war, then returning after the war was over. The tracks on his first two releases injected the upbeat rhythms of Angolas popular kuduro dance style with blown-out, grimy distortion and field recordings depicting the war-torn landscape. Following a bout with COVID-19 that left Nazar seriously ill for a year, as well as the start of a serious relationship, he returned with his second full-length, Demilitarize, in 2025. On this album, his music drifts further away from kuduro, with more fluid, delicate rhythms that squirm and slither rather than charge forward or blaze a path through ruins. Most notably, the album contains a heavier presence of Nazars vocals, which resemble more of a soft, Sampha-like croon than the Tricky-esque dead-eyed recitation of earlier track "Airstrike." The albums title, as well as songs like "Disarm" and "Unlearn," suggests a more sensitive, empathetic perspective, and the music is appropriately more delicate and nuanced rather than explosive and urgent. Tracks with more pronounced, thumping beats are still surrounded by ghostly voices and flickering effects, with "Mantra" featuring sudden interjections of beats and samples, coming closer to Nazars earlier sound. Demilitarizes introspective, R&B-influenced direction indicates Nazars growth and transformation, expressing greater emotional depth while producing some of his most intriguing music. ~ Paul Simpson
