Eddie Palmieri is one of the originators of mambo and cha-cha big-band arrangements, and THE SUN OF LATIN MUSIC is a fine example of his craft. One of the best examples of Palmieri's songwriting style is "Una Rosa Espanola," which begins like a slow, lugubrious, tear-jerker of a Latin "Blue Moon," only to evolve, fewer than four bars later, to a complex web of cowbells and congas.
Palmieri often begins these pieces in soft tones; but he'll turn around in an instant with a three-ton arsenal of horn blasts and rhythm. The minimal and modest grouping of plucked strings and piano chords on "Nunca Contigo" serves merely as a modest bridge into the next phase of big-band insanity. Similarly, the psychedelic mind-expansion that occurs on "Un Dia Bonito" is ultimately cut short and consumed by the combined power of Senor Palmieri and company. If you find yourself stranded in a desert island with no food or water, don't worry: all you'll need is THE SUN OF LATIN MUSIC.
