スライ&ザ・ファミリー・ストーンのドキュメンタリー映画『SLY LIVES! (aka The Burden of Black Genius)』(スライ・リヴズ!) のサウンドトラック。2025年1月にサンダンス映画祭でプレミアム公開され、2月13日より米Huluにて配信公開。同作品は2021年2月に制作が発表され、『サマー・オブ・ソウル』のドキュメンタリーを監督であり、オスカー(アカデミー)も獲得しているクエストラヴ(ザ・ルーツのリーダー)が監督を務めている。このサウンドトラックには、バンドのヒット曲の他、レア音源、未発表バージョン音源など7曲収録、さらにクエストラヴとブルックリンのDJ/リミキサー/ヒップ・ホップ・プロデューサーのJ.Periodによる新しい未発表エディット3曲の計21曲が収録。
同ドキュメンタリー映画は、彼らのヒット曲(「Hot Funk In the Summertime」や「Thank You」「I Want To Take You Higher」)やヒット・アルバム(『Stand!』や『There's a Riot Goin' On』)を通じて、人種や性別はもちろん、ソウルやファンク、ゴスペル、ラテン、サイケデリック・ロックといったジャンルの垣根を超えた伝説やその生涯を描いており、アンドレ3000、ディアンジェロ、チャカ・カーン、Qティップ、ナイル・ロジャーズ、ジミー・ジャム&テリー・ルイス、ジョージ・クリントン、ルース・コープランド、クライヴ・デイヴィスらのインタビューも見どころとなっている。クエストラヴはSNSで「この映画はスライ・ストーンの人生、音楽、文化的な影響を探求し、成功を収めた黒人アーティストが直面する問題に光を当てた作品だ」とコメントしている。

While editing Summer of Soul, an Oscar- and Grammy-winning documentary on the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival, director Questlove had a thought that a new Sly Stone doc was necessary, particularly with regard to the musicians taxing rise and steep fall. On-stage at Harlems Mount Morris Park, Sly & the Family Stone were only ten days away from playing Woodstock, and though they already had major commercial hits with "Dance to the Music," "Everyday People," and "Stand!," the latter festival brought the band to a new level of fame. During only the next couple years, Sly & the Family Stone scored number one pop hits with "Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)" and "Family Affair," released one of the greatest (if premature) Greatest Hits compilations, and topped the album chart with the unparalleled Theres a Riot Goin On. Coincidentally, mere hours after Questlove verbalized his idea to his producer and editor, he got a call from Common, asking him if hed be interested in directing a documentary on Sly Stone. Questlove answered the call and then some with Sly Lives! (aka The Burden of Black Genius). The film digs deep with vintage footage and tells a fuller story with additional context provided by members, associates, and peers of the Family Stone, and many musicians and other cultural figures Stone has inspired. Like the film, the soundtrack is the result of ardent archival work with some modern touches. Its not a straight overview; The Essential Sly & the Family Stone fits that bill. An assortment of singles and album cuts span 1967s bullish "Underdog" to 1974s defeated "Cant Strain My Brain," two songs emblematic of Stones trajectory. A greater number of alternate versions, mixes, edits, and studio offcuts -- some with chatter -- are fodder for insatiable fanatics who have worn out the bonus cuts on expanded album reissues. An alternate mix of "Sing a Simple Song," slowed to a grind, seems entirely wrong until the groove takes hold. "Babies Makin Babies," rendered as a tantalizing one-minute "interlude," flat-out cooks. Questloves edit of "Family Affair" turns up and hardens the knocks and hisses of the Rhythm King drum machine without drowning out Billy Prestons electric piano and Bobby Womacks guitar. An instrumental first take of "Stand!" sounds as if the band is working it out rather than aiming to nail it down. Nothing is all that revelatory, but it all forms an enjoyable companion to the documentary. ~ Andy Kellman
