ヴィラ=ロボスは多数の楽器を操りましたが、中でもギターの演奏は卓越しており、かのセゴビアも感服したと伝えられています。彼のギター作品は現代のギタリストにとって重要なレパートリーの一つ。どの曲もブラジルの伝統音楽を巧みに取り入れています。「12の練習曲」はギターにおけるショパンの練習曲のような存在とされ、ブラジル民謡組曲やショーロ第1番は作曲家の若き日の多彩な経験を反映。「5つの前奏曲」もブラジル民俗音楽の要素を取り入れた小品集として構成されています。さらに、最近発見された「ワルツ・ショーロ」や、未完の「演奏会用ワルツ第2番」などの貴重な作品も収録。シンコペーションのリズム、エキゾチックなハーモニー、心沸き立つような官能的なメロディが織りなす刺激的なプログラムです。
ハラースはアンドレス・セゴビア国際ギターコンクールと瀬戸大橋国際ギターコンクールで優勝した名手。ニューヨーク・デビューは「衝撃的」と評され、スペイン音楽を収めたソロ・デビューCDはセゴビアを超えると称賛されました。NAXOSとBISレーベルに数多くの録音があり、とりわけニャタリのアルバム「Alma Brasileira」(BISSA2086)はラテン・グラミー賞を受賞するなどどれも高く評価されています。SACDハイブリッド・ディスクでのリリース。

Heitor Villa-Lobos was a fine guitarist, and his guitar music shows up on recitals. However, it is not overly common, and it is good to have a superbly played survey of the lot. Much of it was written for Andres Segovia and is of a highly virtuosic nature. The Douze Etudes of 1928, in fact, were too virtuosic even for Segovia, and they were later published with modifications by the Spaniard. In any case, this is some of the most thrilling guitar music around, and guitarist Franz Halasz does them justice. It is a bit deceptive to call the pieces etudes, for trying to play them would hardly lead one to the levels required; the opening "des arpeges" exercises are fiery indeed, and theyre enhanced by Halaszs own production and engineering work from the Evangelische Kreuzkirche in Munich; he gets a rich, resonant sound out of his contemporary Spanish guitars, without any distracting background noise at all. A church is often not a good acoustic environment for the guitar, but here, it works beautifully. The rest of the program offers Villa-Lobos characteristic mixes of European material and Brazilian popular traditions. There are two major works: the Suite populaire bresilienne and the Cinq preludes, along with some smaller pieces that are rarely heard; one of them, the early Valsa Concerto No. 2, was completed by Debora Halasz. A compelling nearly hour and a half of Villa-Lobos, this album made classical best-seller lists in the spring of 2025. ~ James Manheim
