ヴァインベルク: 弦楽四重奏曲集 第5集

2006年にルーマニアのゲオルゲ・ディマ音楽アカデミーの生徒たちによって結成され、2014年の大阪国際室内楽コンクールをはじめとする多くのコンクールで優勝したアルカディア・クァルテット。前作の第4集はレコード芸術ONLINEで「表情のえぐり込みが深く、既存の全集とは違った個性がある。優秀な録音もアドヴァンテージだ」として推薦盤になりました。この第5集には、ヴァインベルクの異なる時期の作品が収録されています。1944年に書かれた第3番は、彼の最初の成熟した四重奏曲と見なされる作品です。後の1987年には、彼自身がこの曲を「室内交響曲第2番」として改訂しています。1963年の第9番は、第二次世界大戦後、ギレリスやコーガン、コンドラシンといった著名な音楽家たちに支持された「輝かしい10年」の産物です。1978年に作曲された第14番は、ショスタコーヴィチの死後3年を経た時期の作品であり、5つの楽章がアタッカで切れ目なく演奏され、楽章ごとにメトロノーム記号のみが標示されています。
「インプロヴィゼーションとロマンス」は、スターリン時代に生まれた作品です。当時、作曲家たちは国家の求める「理解しやすい」音楽を書かざるを得ませんでしたが、ヴァインベルクは自らの音楽に独自の叙情性を織り込むことに成功していたと言えるでしょう。「インプロヴィゼーション」は、弱音器をつけて演奏されるアダージョで、流麗かつ美しい旋律が展開します。続く「ロマンス」は、彼のピアノ作品『子供の雑記帳』に通じる親しみやすい作風を持っています。この作品は彼の生前に演奏されることはなく、2018年6月にダネル四重奏団によって初演されました。

The continuing increase in the reputation of Mieczyslaw Weinberg is exemplified by the cycle of his 17 string quartets being undertaken by the Arcadia Quartet, the second after that from the Quatuor Danel. This fifth volume in the set is absorbing throughout and might make a good item to begin with for those interested in hearing just a single recording for now. It defines "periods" in Weinbergs output and offers examples from each one, including the intermezzo, during which Weinberg and other composers had to adapt themselves to Stalinist censorship. The old line that Weinberg was too derivative of Shostakovich is pretty much dead, but if one had to apply it to any of these pieces, it would be the String Quartet No. 3 in D minor, Op. 14, composed in 1944 and reflecting the Russian accents of Shostakovichs chamber music of the period, although the harmonic structure is Weinbergs own. Next comes the Improvisation & Romance of 1950, where Weinberg offers a purely lyrical work in an attempt to conform to the dictates of Stalins cultural apparatus. It is a limpid and quite effective pair of pieces. The String Quartet No. 9 in F sharp major, Op. 80, returns to a higher-energy mode, and for all the talk of Shostakovichs influence on Weinberg, it seems likely that at least the finale of this quartet influenced Shostakovichs String Quartet No. 11 in F minor, Op. 122. Weinbergs own Op. 122, the String Quartet No. 14, composed in 1978 after Shostakovichs death, is in a different world. It has no key designation, and its striking first movement is marked by gaps and silences that come together in several ways over the rest of the work. The Arcadia Quartet gets into the character of each work, and another benefit is the sound from Potton Hall in Suffolk, ideal for this medium and these works. These are state-of-the-art recordings of chamber works that are quickly becoming canonical. The album made classical best-seller charts in the spring of 2025. ~ James Manheim
