映画『ブルータリスト』は、第二次世界大戦下のホロコーストを生き延び、アメリカに渡ったハンガリー系ユダヤ人建築家=ラースロー・トート(エイドリアン・ブロディ)の数奇な半生を描いたフィクションであり、215分に渡る壮大な人間ドラマ。監督・脚本・製作は36歳の新鋭、ブラディ・コーベット。音楽を手掛けたのは、UKのインディー・バンドである、ケイジャン・ダンス・パーティ、ヤックとしての活動でも知られるダニエル・ブルンバーグ。

After spending the prior 15 years on projects spanning Cajun Dance Party, Yuck, Oupa, Hebronix, and GUO -- some of them bands and some solo projects -- experimental indie musician Daniel Blumberg composed his first feature-length film score for 2020s The World to Come, a psychological drama directed by Mona Fastvold. It found Blumberg working with a sparse palette of clarinets, strings, and percussion, and collaborating with avant-garde musicians including Peter Brotzman. Blumberg went on to win the Academy Award for Best Original Score for his second film, the more ambitious The Brutalist, a movie about a fictional architect and Holocaust survivor Laszlo Toth (played by Adrien Brody). An over-three-and-a-half-hour epic co-written by Fastvold and the films director, Brady Corbet, The Brutalist finds Blumberg sticking with a distinctively spacious and experimental approach for its 81-minute score (including the 11-minute "Intermission," a deconstruction of Laszlos theme performed by pianist John Tilbury, then 88 years old). Treated piano features heavily in the score, which also includes brass, woodwinds, double bass, and percussion, which together provide a somber and minimalist core palette thats further reduced to a jazz combo for tracks like the racing "Jazz Club" and improvised "Building Site." The tender piano theme for Laszlo that permeates the score is introduced on the second cue, "Overture (Laszlo)," and is later transformed into sounds like moiling brass ("Steel"), more Impressionistic piano ("Bicycle"), dissonant horn ("Handjob"), out-of-tune piano ("Bath"), and multiple solo instruments with staggered, overlapping entrances (the warped "Heroin"). Consistently unsettling, sometimes industrial, dissonant, or atonal, and often plaintive and longing, The Brutalist doesnt break character until the closing "Epilogue (Venice)." A track partly recorded with synth pop hero Vince Clarke, it brings the 1940s story into the 80s and provides a moment of catharsis. Blumbergs score, which was mixed and co-produced by Peter Walsh (Scott Walker), is so haunting and essential to the discontent of the story and film as a whole that it seems an artistic statement as much as a soundtrack. ~ Marcy Donelson
