アレクサンドル・クナイフェル: Chapter Eight

"驚くほど深い美意識"が込められた、ロシアの作曲家による"祈り"の作品

ロシアの作曲家アレクサンドル・クナイフェル(1943-2024)の曲をエストニアの指揮者アンドレス・ムストネンが指揮したアルバムがECMニュー・シリーズより発売されます。収録されている『Chapter Eight(第8章)』は、旧約聖書の『雅歌』『ソロモンの歌』を基に、"最も響き渡る教会の音響空間で"演奏されるべき"社会の祈り"として構想されました。クナイフェルの言葉を借りれば、"筋やドラマのない"作品で、その中心にあるのは音の精妙な融合ですが、謎めいたところがないとは言えません。ここではチェロ奏者のパトリック・デメンガが独奏者としての役割を放棄し、ムストネンの指揮の下で3つの合唱団により組み合わされた声と教会に広がる雰囲気に身を任せています。録音はバロック時代に建てられ、卓越した音響効果があることで長い間知られているルツェルンのイエズス会教会堂で行われました。

旧ソヴィエト時代のウズベキスタン共和国の首都タシケントで生まれ、幼い頃からチェロを学んだクナイフェルは、モスクワ音楽院でムスティスラフ・ロストロポーヴィチに師事しました。ロストロポーヴィチはこの『Chapter Eight(第8章)』を初めて聴いた時に、「教会、合唱団とチェロのためのこの作品にはどれほど深い美意識が込められているのかと驚くばかりである」と語りました。

Chapter Eight, otherwise known as The Eighth Chapter (1993), by the Uzbek-born composer Alexander Knaifel, may be the only work ever to list the building where the work is to be performed among the specified performers. He called the work "a community prayer" to be realized "in the most reverberant church acoustics." This recording from 2009, made in the Jesuitenkirche in Luzern, Switzerland, certainly fills the bill, and credit goes to the ECM labels engineers, in a difficult live situation, for giving the music the desired sense of growing out of the walls. The music is unique. It would be tempting to classify Knaifels sparse style of the 1990s and beyond with the music of the holy minimalists, but that doesnt quite capture its feeling. It is not static but does move, just quite slowly, with a sense of energy being passed among the three choirs involved. At the center of the exchange is cellist Thomas Demenga, who brings forward motion to the music despite its often glacial text-setting in which the words of the biblical Song of Songs are reworked and rearranged. At the very least, the album offers a chance to contemplate that sexy but mysterious text (in Russian), and the work is really unlike others of its time. It should be heard by those interested in the new simplicities of the post-Soviet era. ~ James Manheim

チェロと合唱の編成による旧約聖書をもとにした約1時間の作品。チェロは人の声に近い深みのある音色で合唱と相乗効果を生むようで、エストニアの作曲家クルヴィッツにもこの編成で浮遊感漂う良い作品を発表している。作曲家クナイフェルは昨年亡くなったウズベキスタン生まれ。ロストロポーヴィチにチェロを学んだ経歴がある。聴いてからそのロストロポーヴィチがこの作品をTeldecレーベルに録音していたことを思い出した。それは重い歴史を背負ったような濃厚な演奏だった。このムストネンとラトヴィアの合唱団は作曲家ペルトの音世界を髣髴させる、体を包み込んでくれる感覚と静謐な空気を醸す。
