サーリアホ: 歌劇「アドリアナ・マーテル」

グラミー賞を受賞した、フィンランドの現代作曲家によるオペラの世界初録音。CD2枚組

フィンランド出身の現代作曲家カイヤ・サーリアホ(1952-2023)作曲による歌劇『アドリアナ・マーテル』の世界初録音がドイツ・グラモフォンより発売されます。CD2枚組。この録音は第67回グラミー賞の「最優秀オペラ・レコーディング賞」を受賞しました。サーリアホは「最優秀現代クラシック作曲家」にもノミネートされました。サーリアホと同郷で生涯の友人でもあったエサ=ペッカ・サロネンがサンフランシスコ交響楽団を指揮し、ソリストはタイトルロールのフルール・バロンの他、アクセル・ファニョ、ニコラス・ファン、クリストファー・パーヴスが務め、演出をやはりサーリアホの友人であったピーター・セラーズが行っています。録音は2023年6月にサンフランシスコのデービス・シンフォニーホールで行われましたが、それはこの作曲家の早すぎる死からわずか数日後のことでした。サーリアホはヘルシンキ、フライブルク、パリで作曲を学び、1982年からパリを拠点に活動していた、同世代を代表する世界的な作曲家の一人でした。パリのフランス国立音響音楽研究所(IRCAM)で学び、研究したことが彼女の音楽に大きな影響を与え、ライヴ演奏と電子音響を融合し、彼女独特の豊かで神秘的なテクスチュアを創り出しました。

2006年4月にパリ国立オペラでこの作品の世界初演を行ったエサ=ペッカ・サロネンは、「それから18年後、私は以前よりも年を重ね、より経験を積んだ音楽家として、サンフランシスコでのこの素晴らしいスコアに戻って来ました。この録音に収められたサンフランシスコ交響楽団との公演のリハーサル中にカイヤの訃報が届きました。この作品を世界と共有できることは、それこそが慰めであり、それは私の人生において最も重要な存在の一人であり続ける友人のお陰です」とライナーノーツに書いています。

Kaija Saariahos opera Adriana Mater appeared in 2006 and had a troubled reception; this 2024 release is its first recording. The work featured the composers characteristic color-oriented language inflected to depict wartime violence, with librettist Amin Maalouf drawing on his own memories as a former war correspondent in its tale of the aftermath of a rape. The setting is an unspecified country, but European audiences with the Bosnian War just a decade in the past would have felt the overtones of that conflict. The particular shape taken by Saariahos style in this work was difficult for some critics to take at the time, with its surface complexity seemingly at odds with the visceral quality of the story. However, conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen had plenty of experience with the opera by the time of these 2023 live performances, and he probably gives it its best possible representation. He keeps the action moving in big arcs, with a full sense of the intensity of the action, including the events that flow from the title characters pregnancy subsequent to the rape. The singers are mostly francophone (a sore point with Parisian critics in the original run), and several are excellent, including Fleur Barron as Adriana and the rising soprano Axelle Fanyo as Adrianas sister Refko. Working from several live performances, Deutsche Grammophons engineers forge a clear sonic whole. Making a strong case that this opera by a major composer is worth another hearing, this recording won a Grammy Award for Best Opera Recording in 2024. ~ James Manheim
