The effects are still being felt from the 2009 rediscovery of a large number of works by Florence Price in a house in rural Illinois. The cache included some of her later and most ambitious works, of which the Piano Quintet in A minor is one. The range of Prices work has also attracted international ensembles, including the Takacs Quartet and piano Marc-Andre Hamelin. The performance of Dvořaks Piano Quintet in A major, Op. 81, with its melancholy Dumka slow movement, is excellent, but the real news here is the Price performance, which has several strong points. One is the lithe treatment of the "Juba" third movement, a device Price used in several of her major compositions. Performers tend to give it an exaggerated ragtime treatment, but the lighter playing here seems closer to what Price had in mind and places the movement in a line running back to Dvořaks folklike dance movements. The performers also grasp the new horizons being reached for by Price in this work, whose outer movements have some of the widest-ranging harmonic trails in any of her works. The end result is an argument for making Price into Dvořaks true 20th century successor, and it is a major recording of her work. ~ James Manheim
