異様なまでの緊迫感

ショスタコーヴィチの交響曲第11番は、戦争、抗議、国家が危機に瀕していた時代のさなかに書かれました。1905年のロシア革命の混乱と悲劇を反映しており、ショスタコーヴィチはこの第11番を「民衆について」と言ったとされています。作品冒頭、当時の多くの人々が感じていた陰鬱な抑圧が描かれ、徐々に正義のために闘う人々の勇気の精神が体現し始め、ショスタコーヴィチ自身の父と叔父が経験した、ロシア革命へとむかいます。緊迫感のある作品を、ノセダの気迫にこたえるように、LSOの面々が高い緊張感で演奏しています。指揮者のノセダは、歌劇場での経験も長い一方で、シンフォニー、とりわけロシアのレパートリーにも精通していることで知られます。LSOともすでに録音を重ねており、ショスタコーヴィチの交響曲はこれで10曲めの録音となります。

Back in the days when modernist rule held sway in Western music criticism, Shostakovichs Symphony No. 11 in G minor, Op. 103 ("The Year 1905") was criticized for being too Hollywood-like. If that ever made any sense, it doesnt anymore, and London Symphony Orchestra conductor Gianandrea Noseda is to be commended for taking the work for what it is in this live recording. The first two movements are vivid re-creations of the empty Palace Square in St. Petersburg and of the brutally repressed demonstration there on January 9, 1905, with the third movement a memorial to those killed, and the Tocsin finale a clear call to action in a work marking the anniversary, not of the 1905 conflicts but of the Russian Revolution of 1917. The high drama of the opening two movements is of the type that is said to require a Russian conductor, but dont tell Noseda that; the chill of an empty space waiting to be filled with new ideas has rarely been so keen, and the violence of the Tsars troops in the second movement is intense indeed, and the funeral emotions of the slow movement would have gotten Shostakovich thrown in jail today. Another strong draw of the album is the engineering; it has been a pleasure to hear the increasing quality of the engineering work of the LSO Live staff at Londons Barbican Hall. Even those listening on low-quality equipment will be impressed by both the dynamic range here and the sonic clarity all across it. An excellent Shostakovich release that made classical best-seller lists in the spring of 2025. ~ James Manheim

第2楽章中盤の打楽器の連打に開始される血の日曜日の描写が強調され、荒っぽい演奏に傾きがちな作品を第1楽章や弱音部分を大変丁寧に緻密に仕上げた名演。高貴なサウンドで完璧な性能を誇るロンドン交響楽団がそれを維持しつつ、音楽に没入する。例えれば冷静と情熱の間をギリギリの線で行く血の通った演奏を繰り広げている。ノセダのショスタコーヴィチシリーズの中でも突出した出来栄えだ。そして強調したいのがLSOレーベルの音質。久しぶりにオーケストラ録音で往年のDECCA録音のような生々しく生気を耳にできる素晴らしさだ。CD層でも充分に堪能できるのでお薦めしたい
