ラヴェル作品に対してお互いに向き合い、ラヴェルに敬意を表した作品を組み合わせた、ラヴェル生誕150年記念アルバム

ベルトラン・シャマユは、このアルバム「ラヴェル:フラグメンツ」について「幼少期から常に私と共にあった作曲家の生誕150周年を祝うための、私自身による貢献です」と述べています。ソロ・ピアノ音楽のアルバムであるこの作品には、ラヴェル自身による《ラ・ヴァルス》や《ダフニスとクロエ》からのトランスクリプションや、シャマユ自身が編曲したラヴェルの声楽作品、さらにはラヴェルへのオマージュとして書かれた作品が収録されています。これらのオマージュ作品のうち5曲は、アルテュール・オネゲル、ホアキン・ニン、アレクサンドル・タンスマン、シャビエル・モンサルバーチェ、そしてラヴェルやドビュッシーなど20世紀初頭の主要な作曲家たちの作品を広めたピアニスト、リカルド・ビニェスといった作曲家たちによるものです。また、3曲は現代の作曲家であるベッツィ・ジョラス、サルヴァトーレ・シャリーノ、フレデリック・デュリユーによるものです。
現在でもベストセラーとなっている、エラートがシャマユによるラヴェルのソロ・ピアノ作品全集を2016年にリリースした際、『グラモフォン』誌は「息をのむような美しさと比類なき力を持つ啓示的な演奏」と称賛し、「フランス音楽や卓越したピアノ演奏を愛する人にとって、この作品を見逃す手はない」と高評価を得ています。

このアルバムが録音されたミラヴァル・スタジオは、プロヴァンス地方にある古城シャトー・ミラヴァルを1977年にジャック・ルーシェが改装したスタジオで、古くはAC/DC、スティング、ピンク・フロイド、シャーデー、ワム!らが、伝説的なセッションを行いましたが、ここ20年間使用されていませんでした。しかし2021年にブラッド・ピットが名音楽プロデューサーのダミアン・クインタードとパートナーを組み、1970年代当時の貴重な録音機材を保ちつつ、ピットとクインタードが設計した最新のアナログ/デジタルのハイブリッド機材を導入し、この伝説のミラヴァル・スタジオを2022年夏に改修復活させました。このアルバムでもダミアン・クインタードが、レコーディング、編集、マスタリングを手がけています。それ以降のこのアルバムを含めて3枚のアルバムは、ミラヴァル・スタジオで録音されており、独特な空間が再現された録音も、世界的に高評価を得ています。

The title "Fragments" on this album refers to the Fragments symphoniques de Daphnis et Chloe of Ravel, but what is included on this 2025 release by Bertrand Chamayou are not fragmentary works by Ravel. Instead, these are short works by Ravel and others, pertaining more to the Ravel legacy than to the efforts of completists. Indeed, a large chunk of the program consists of tributes to Ravel, both from composers who were around in his time and more recent ones. Several quote Ravels works. These are exceptionally interesting, both because in Chamayou, listeners have a great Ravel player whose talents extend to these works and because the program shows something of the width of Ravels influence. It extends to modernists like Betsy Jolas and Salvatore Sciarrino (sample the latters high-powered De la nuit) and to foreigners as well as French composers. Listeners who sprang for Chamayous big Ravel complete works of 2016 will find worthwhile items that werent included there, including the notoriously troublesome single-piano version of La valse and Chamayous own transcriptions of Ravel songs. This thoroughly enjoyable Ravel item made classical best-seller lists in early 2025, the 150th anniversary of Ravels birth.
