儚さと力強さが共存する唯一無二のアンサンブルで、高い評価と人気を誇るブラック・カントリー・ニュー・ロード(以下BC,NR)が、待望の3rdアルバム 『Forever Howlong』 を〈Ninja Tune〉よりリリース!
2021年のデビューアルバム『For the first time』が全英チャート4位&マーキュリー・プライズにノミネート、翌年の2ndアルバム『Ants From Up There』 は全英3位を記録。2023年には新曲のみで構成されたライブアルバム『Live at Bush Hall』 を発表し、バンドの結束力と進化を証明してきたBC,NR。遂に届けられた3rdアルバムで、またしても彼らは新たな音楽的地平へと向かう。
本作ではアークティック・モンキーズ、ゴリラズ、ベス・ギボンズ、 デペッシュ・モード、フォンテインズD.C.などの生み出した数々の名作に携わるジェームス・フォードをプロデューサーに迎え、BC,NRは新たなフォーメーションに挑戦している。タイラー・ハイド、ジョージア・エラリー、メイ・カーショーのという女性メンバー3人でほとんどの曲のリード・ヴォーカルとソングライティングを分担。ジョージアは「3人の女性メンバーが歌うことで、アルバムに一貫したテーマが生まれた」「女性の視点が加わったことで『Ants From Up There』とは全く違う作品にできた。音楽自体もその影響を受けていると思う」とコメントしている。
変化し続ける環境の中でも、彼らは柔軟に適応しながら困難を乗り越え、強固な結束を築き、進化を続けてきた。クラシック音楽の教養を持つメンバーと、独学で音楽を学んだメンバーからなるBC,NRの特異な才能は、2010年代後半、南ロンドンのインディー・ロック・シーンの音楽的聖地となっているThe Windmillでブラック・ミディやスクイッドらと共にステージ経験を重ね、The Quietus誌から「世界最高のバンド」と称賛されるまでに成長した。
アルバム『Forever Howlong』は、フォーク、プログレ、バロック・ポップ、オルタナティブ・ロックなど多様なジャンルを取り入れ、ジョアンナ・ニューサムやランディ・ニューマン、フィオナ・アップル、ジャニス・イアンまで幅広い音楽的影響を反映。しかしその中でも、BC,NRならではの独創的なサウンドは揺るがず、3人の異なる歌声とスタイルを融合させた新たな集団音楽としての統一感と集中力を発揮している。

Londons Black Country, New Road settle into their next phase with Forever Howlong, the groups third studio record and follow-up to 2022s highlight Ants from Up There. Lodged in between these two releases is Live at Bush Hall, a wildly entertaining concert album from 2023 that acts as a bridge between the bands two creative epochs. As with most aspects of BC,NR, the circumstances are unusual; when former frontman Isaac Wood made an amicable departure just days before Ants hotly tipped release, the remaining six members did a quick about-face and wrote an entirely new set of songs. What was supposed to be the tour for their previous album ended up being the trial run of a rapidly evolving group of songwriters. Live at Bush Hall, which consisted of all-new material, was the sound of a band building the road (pun intended) as they drove over it. Its an unusual way to get from point A to B, but BC,NR are nothing if not resilient. Bush Hall gave them an outlet to test their new infrastructure before heading back into the studio. Produced by James Ford (Fontaines D.C., Blur), Forever Howlong is just as wily and unpredictable as anything theyve done before, but with the added bonus of being delivered by three distinctive voices. The groups female half -- bassist Tyler Hyde, violinist Georgia Ellery, and keyboardist May Kershaw -- now serve as BC,NRs co-frontpeople, each one contributing at least three songs to the set. Ellerys exultant "Besties" kicks things off, echoing the unifying theme of friendship they established on one of Bush Halls standouts, "Up Song." The groups elasticity -- as players and teammates -- remains one of their greatest strengths and propels highlights like Kershaws "The Big Spin" and Hydes "Nancy Tries to Take the Night" ever forward with their own unique energy. BC,NR have long since shed the post-punk mantle of their first record in favor of something less describable. Instrumentally, they inhabit a world of chamber folk, but they play with jazz chops and a theatrical art-rock zeal, though many of the albums prettiest moments are its least cluttered. The lovely three-part harmonies of "Mary" and the slowly building title track are dazzling little worlds within the greater one theyve built together. Black Country, New Road remain one of the most intriguing indie bands of the 2020s, and their flair for reinvention makes every release a thrill. ~ Timothy Monger

2022年の『Ants From Up There』リリース直前にフロントマンが脱退し、翌年には現体制で新曲のみのライヴ盤を発表していた6人が、ついに初のスタジオ・アルバムが完成した。ほぼすべての作曲/ヴォーカルを女性メンバー3人が担当し、ノーブルで凛とした歌声と美しいハーモニーがバロック・ポップ～ソフト・ロックを下地にしたアレンジと重なり、教養豊かで人柄の良い紳士淑女たちのお茶会に招かれているかのような極上の音世界に運ばれる。ひとつひとつの楽器がクリアに録られたジェイムズ・フォードの音作りも演奏の素晴らしさを際立たせており、脱帽せざるを得ない再出発だ。
