現代を代表するジャズ・アーティストの一人であり、40年以上にわたってジャズ界をリードしてきたサックス奏者、ブランフォード・マルサリスが、ついにブルーノート・レコード移籍第一弾作品は1974年にキース・ジャレットがヨーロピアン・カルテットでECMから発表した名盤『ビロンギング』に丸々取り組んだ作品!

ピアニストのジョーイ・カルデラッツォ、ベーシストのエリック・レヴィス、ドラマーのジャスティン・フォークナーをフィーチャーした、評価の高い長年のブランフォード・マルサリス・カルテットによる解釈で、2019年以来6年ぶりのマルサリスの新作だ。

ブランフォード・マルサリスは、キース・ジャレットの『ビロンギング』が1974年にリリースされたとき、他の音楽に夢中になっていたことを認めている。「当時は高校1年生でR&Bを聴いていてキース・ジャレットのソロ・ピアノ作品は知っていたものの、『ビロンギング』の存在も知らなかった。でも私がジャズに注目するようになった途端、それは大きく変わった。ピアニストのケニー・カークランドが、サックス奏者のヤン・ガルバレク、ベーシストのパレ・ダニエルソン、ドラマーのヨン・クリステンセンを擁するキース・ジャレットのヨーロピアン・カルテットを紹介くれた。80年代のある日、私たちは飛行機に乗っていて、ケニーがヘッドホンを私の耳に当てて、キース・ジャレット・ヨーロピアン・カルテットの1979年のアルバム『マイ・ソング』を聴かせてくれたんだ。彼が5分後にヘッドホンをとり戻そうとしたとき、私は彼の手をひっぱたいて遠ざけたほど感動したんだ」と回想しコメントしている。

マルサリスが自身のカルテットの前作、2019年の『The Secret Between the Shadow and the Soul』に『ビロンギング』に収録されている「The Windup」を入れようと決めたときにも同様の発見があったという。「前作のためにみんなで『The Windup』を聴いていたら、レヴィスが『ビロンギング』を丸々レコーディングすればいい。アルバム全体がとても素晴らしいし、いろいろなことができるはずだ」と言ったんだ。アルバム全体がとても素晴らしいし、それを使っていろいろなことができる。パンデミックが終わった後も、私たちはまだ、『そうだ、これをやるべきだ』と感じていたんだ」ともコメントしている。

このカルテットは、これまでもチャールズ・ミンガス、モダン・ジャズ・カルテット、ジョン・コルトレーンなどのクラシックにマルサリスのこれまでのアプローチを適用してきた。楽曲『ビロンギング』では、ヤンがレコードで演奏していたものを明確に演奏した」とマルサリスは指摘する。「しかし、意識的にオマージュを捧げようとは思っていなかった。私はいつもサックス・ソロだけでなく、レコード全体を聴いている。『ビロンギング』で最も印象的なのは、すべてがうまく調和していることなんだ」ともコメントしている。

『ビロンギング』のレコーディング時に初めて招集され、後に1970年代を代表するグループとなったジャレットのバンドとは異なり、マルサリス・カルテットはバンドとして稀有な歴史を持つ。レヴィスは1996年、カルデラッツォは1999年、フォークナーは2009年に加入しており、互いの音を聴き、反応する能力は比類ない。マルサリスにとって同じくらい重要なのは、時間が与えてくれた教訓だという。「私たちの最大の利点は、キースのバンドが持っていなかった50年分の情報と、その共有された経験を処理する能力だと思う」。

マルサリスは、「このグループの目的は、ジャズ・グループというより室内楽グループに近いものだ」と指摘し、その過程で彼は、自分のアプローチに妥協することなくリスナーを魅了する。「どんな音楽でも、聴衆が求めているのは素晴らしいメロディと伴奏のビートだ。僕らの旅がどこへ行こうが、リスナーがダンスを続ける限り、関係ないんだ」とマルサリスは語っている。

Branford Marsalis and his quartet take their bold creativity and warm, familial camaraderie to new heights on 2025s Belonging, a complete reinterpretation of Keith Jarretts 1974 album of the same title. That inventive band camaraderie is a potent combination Marsalis has been engendering since he first formed a quartet in the 1980s with pianist Kenny Kirkland, bassist Robert Hurst, and drummer Jeff "Tain" Watts. The group -- carried over from his work with his brother Wynton -- was unquestionably one of the best of its time, marked by daring improvisation and an almost preternatural sense for group interplay. In fact, it was apparently Kirkland who first introduced Marsalis to Jarretts European Quartet with saxophonist Jan Garbarek, bassist Palle Danielsson, and drummer Jon Christensen. Following Kirklands tragic death at 43, Marsalis kept the group going, bringing on board pianist Joey Calderazzo and eventually adding bassist Eric Revis and drummer Justin Faulkner. He also returned to Jarretts work, playing a version of "The Windup" (also off Belonging) on 2019s The Secret Between the Shadow and the Soul. Jarretts original album has a perfect balance of harmonic refinement matched with an organic funkiness, a combination that feels akin to Marsalis own musical aesthetics. Here, his quartet brings a fresh intensity, as well as a gregariousness to the material, as on the opening "Spiral Dance," which conjures the kinetic, hard-swinging energy of Marsalis early quartet albums. They also tap into Jarretts more introspective qualities, as on the delicately rendered ballad "Blossom" and the title track, the latter of which sounds, improbably, as if Duke Ellington had recorded an ECM album. Elsewhere, the quartet illuminates the roiling gospel funk and lively Caribbean rhythms of "Long as You Know Youre Living Yours" and the aforementioned "The Windup," respectively. As with Jarretts original recording, Marsalis ends with "Solstice," a track that manages to bring together several of his stylistic touchstones, melding a classical lyricism with a post-bop sophistication, and even forays into avant-garde skronk. Ultimately, Belonging feels like a full-circle moment for Marsalis, bringing both his groups history and his long-gestating passion for Jarretts music into his quartets vibrant present. ~ Matt Collar
