ロックの殿堂の一員であり、グラミー賞受賞アーティストでもある、プログレッシヴ・ロックのパイオニア的存在、イエスが1972年に発表した通算5作目となるスタジオ・アルバム『CLOSE TO THE EDGE(邦題: 危機)』。この作品は、彼らにとって最大のヒット作であると同時に、以降の音楽シーンに多大なる影響を与え、そしてロック史に燦然と輝く"傑作"として語り継がれる歴史的傑作だ。プログレッシヴ・ロックを代表するアルバムとの呼び声も高いこの傑作が今回、5枚のCDとBlu-Ray、そしてアナログ盤からなる豪華7枚組のスーパー・デラックス・エディションとなって登場することが決定した。

この豪華7枚組ボックス・セット『CLOSE TO THE EDGE (SUPER DELUXE EDITION)』には、オリジナル・アルバムの2025年最新リマスター音源やスティーヴン・ウィルソンによる2025年最新リミックス音源、そして未発表音源を含む貴重な音源や1972年12月のロンドン公演の模様を収録した未発表ライヴ音源などが収録されている。

このスーパー・デラックス・エディションには、オリジナル・アルバムの2025年最新リマスター音源を収録したCDとアナログ盤を始め、スティーヴン・ウィルソンによる2025年最新リミックス音源とインストゥルメンタル・ミックスを収録したCDや、当時のエディット音源やラフ・ミックスといった貴重な音源を収録したCD、そして1972年12月にロンドンにあるThe Rainbowで行われたライヴを収録した未発表ライヴ音源を収録した2枚組CDなど、この歴史的傑作を様々な角度から楽しめる音源がたっぷりと収録されている。また、今作に同梱されているBlu-rayには、今回が初出となるスティーヴン・ウィルソンによるアルバムのドルビー・アトモス・ミックスや5.1chミックスのDTS-HDマスター・オーディオ音源などが収録されている。(1/2)

『RARITIES』というサブタイトルが付けられたCDのDisc 3には、アルバム『CLOSE TO THE EDGE』に収録されている楽曲のラフ・ミックスやオルタネイト・ヴァージョン、そしてエディット・ヴァージョンなどが収録されており、それぞれの名曲たちに新たな視点を与えてくれる、貴重な音源を聴くことができる。また、「Siberian Khatru」と「Cord of Life」、そして「Total Mass Retain」という3曲のスティーヴン・ウィルソンによる未発表エディット・ヴァージョンも収録されており、このレア音源集ディスクに華を加えてくれている。また、Disc 4とDisc 5には、今作に伴うツアーの中から、貴重な未発表ライヴ音源となる1972年12月16日に英国ロンドンのザ・レインボーで行われたライヴの模様が収録されており、バンドの全盛期ともいうべきこの時期の素晴らしい未発表のライヴ・パフォーマンスを堪能することができる。

さらに、このコレクションに同梱されているブックレットには、ジャズ&コーヒーのシド・シュワルツによる詳細なライナーノーツが掲載されている。そこで彼は、「究極のイエス・アルバム」と称される今作の核心にある精神性を反映させながら、アルバム『危機』の制作過程とそれに伴う物語を深く掘り下げているのだ。ギタリストのスティーヴ・ハウは、今作についてこうコメントしている。
「『CLOSE TO THE EDGE』は、イエスにとって最も奇跡的な作品だ。ここには私たちにとって初となる20分を超える大作が収録されていて、この曲は、後に発表していく長尺で大規模な楽曲たちの雛形となっていった。同様に、最高の音楽的かつ技術的な完成度を捉えた10分に及ぶ楽曲も2曲収録されている。前作『FRAGILE』でのレコーディング経験が、イエスというバンドのキャリアを決定づける重要な意味を持つこのアルバムを作ることを可能にしたのだろう」

ギタリストのスティーヴ・ハウ、リード・ヴォーカルのジョン・アンダーソン、ベーシストのクリス・スクワイア、キーボーディストのリック・ウェイクマン、そしてドラマーのビル・ブルフォードは、1972年6月、ロンドンにあるスタジオ、Advisionに入り、長年のプロデューサーであり最も信頼できる仲間でもあるエディ・オフォードと共にレコーディングを行い、『CLOSE TO THE EDGE』という作品に生命を吹き込んでいった。彼らは「Close to the Edge」や「And You and I」、そして「Siberian Khatru」といった、複数のパートを展開させるプログレッシヴ組曲を通して、彼らにしか成しえない音の魔法を表現していったのだ。1972年9月8日にリリースされた今作は、本国イギリスではオフィシャル・チャート4位に、そして全米アルバム・チャートでは最高位3位を獲得、見事プラチナム・ディスクを獲得する作品となった。そのアルバムの圧倒的なインパクトと多大なる影響力を証明するかのように、ローリング・ストーン誌では「史上最高のアルバム500枚」に選ばれ、ピッチフォーク誌からは「バンドの最高傑作」という賞賛と共に稀にしか見ることの出来ない"9.0"という評価を受けるなど、各メディアからも最大の賛辞が贈られている。(2/2)

With 1971's Fragile having left Yes poised quivering on the brink of what friend and foe acknowledged was the peak of the band's achievement, Close to the Edge was never going to be an easy album to make. Drummer Bill Bruford was already shifting restlessly against Jon Anderson's increasingly mystic/mystifying lyricism, while contemporary reports of the recording sessions depicted bandmate Rick Wakeman, too, as little more than an observer to the vast tapestry that Anderson, Steve Howe, and Chris Squire were creating. For it was vast. Close to the Edge comprised just three tracks, the epic "And You and I" and "Siberian Khatru," plus a side-long title track that represented the musical, lyrical, and sonic culmination of all that Yes had worked toward over the past five years. Close to the Edge would make the Top Five on both sides of the Atlantic, dispatch Yes on the longest tour of their career so far and, if hindsight be the guide, launch the band on a downward swing that only disintegration, rebuilding, and a savage change of direction would cure. 危機｜CDアルバム
　YESの最高傑作、プログレッシヴロックに嵌った原点です。組曲の何れのパートも美しい旋律を奏でます。効果音に頼らず、あくまでも歌と演奏で魅了されます。ドライブでよく聴きます。
ジョンアンダーソンさんの声が引き立て、何回聴いても毎回鮮烈な印象を与えてくれます。
　素晴らしいアルバムを是非、沢山の方に聞いて頂きたいです。

ライブバージョンに音質に問題があります。急に音が小さくなったり、消えたりします。Rhinoだから音質は大丈夫と思ったのですが。
