Selections were recorded using Conlon Nancarrow's custom-altered 1927
Ampico Reproducing Piano. The piano rolls were created using a machine
by Nancarrow.
Colin Nancarrow is one of the most original voices ever to appear on the American music scene. Born in Arkansas, Nancarrow went off to fight the Fascists in the Spanish Civil War, and upon the war's conclusion was
denied his U.S. passport. After the war he settled in Mexico City where he has been composing music for the player-piano, a device that notates music by punching holes in piano rolls. This five disc set is devoted to Nancarrow's 'Studies for Player Piano,' recorded on the composer's 1927 Ampico reproducing piano.
There is no denying that this is strange music. The sound of the reproducing piano is somewhere between that of a harpsichord and a conventional piano. The result is a twanging, pungent tonality that is well suited to Nancarrow's compositional style. Nancarrow's music is flavored by ragtime, free jazz, blues, and minimalism, as well as the unique timbres of Webern. Rhythmic changes are subtle and the repetitive tendencies of the music are hypnotic. This is mysterious music that constantly challenges the listener's notions of tonality and rhythm; in short, it is nothing less than spellbinding.
