Much of country music legend Johnny Cash's life was a struggle between a religious upbringing that had frequently found his family singing hymns while working in the fields, and a later professional life that featured extended bouts of drug abuse. Just As I Am focuses on selected highlights from Cash's considerable output of religious songs between the late 1950s and the '90s (he recorded over 250 for Columbia alone). The production over the years is remarkably consistent, focusing on Cash's rough-hewn vocals, with minimal instrumental and vocal accompaniment, and the overall effect is unabashedly simple, sentimental, and heartfelt.
