The Weavers: Pete Seeger, Fred Hellerman, Ronnie Gilbert, Lee Hays.
With members including the father figure of the folk music revival Pete Seeger and union activist Lee Hays, the Weavers launched a politically active popular folk music movement almost single-handedly in the late 1940s and early '50s, performing traditional material as well as songs by folk artists like Woody Guthrie and Leadbelly. Their records frequently featured lavish orchestral and big band arrangements, as well as backing singers, giving a commercial sheen to a global repertoire that included the energetic "Tzena, Tzena, Tzena," the soaring "Wimoweh," and the wry "Rock Island Line." Forced to disband after being blacklisted in 1952 by the House Un-American Activities Committee, they reformed three years later to international acclaim, continuing to perform until 1964. This four-CD box set covers the band's career from its beginnings in the late-1940s and early '50s to their legendary 1955 Carnegie Hall reunion concert, and includes many of the songs later covered by Bruce Springsteen on his 2006 WE SHALL OVERCOME album.
