イタリアのベルカントオペラの中心人物の一人である多作で多彩なイタリアの作曲家ガエターノ・ドニゼッティは200曲以上の歌曲を作曲しました。そのほとんどはめったに上演されず、最近までまったく知られていなかったものもいくつかあります。音楽学者のロジャー・パーカーの監修によっており、このアルバムでは、オペラのピアノ伴奏者、ウィーン国立歌劇場、ミラノ・スカラ座など有名オペラ・ハウスでコーチを務めるジュリオ・ザッパがピアノを担当しています。オペラ・ララは完全なソロ歌曲を8枚のリサイタル・アルバム・シリーズとしてリリースしていきます。このプロジェクトは、19世紀歌曲レパートリーの中心人物としてのドニゼッティと、ドイツとフランスの作曲家が長らく独占してきた分野におけるイタリア楽派の重要性を強く主張するものです。
マリー=ニコル・ルミューは、力強い声と印象的なオペラ歌唱で知られる有名なメゾ・ソプラノです。彼女は、ドニゼッティの作品をはじめ、世界中の権威ある劇場で演奏してきました。ここに収録された珍しい歌曲を、自然に息に乗せられコントロールの行き届いた美しい歌唱で蘇らせています。

This album, released in 2025, is the fourth in a series of what will eventually be eight albums devoted to Donizettis songs by the Opera Rara label. This material has been all but unknown until now, and listeners have jumped on it; this release landed on classical best-seller lists in early 2025. The songs could be classified by type, but the series planner, Opera Raras Carlo Rizzi, mixes the types on each album, providing variety instead by featuring a different singer on each volume. This tends to place emphasis on different parts of the repertory. Here, mezzo-soprano Marie-Nicole Lemieux is a dramatically minded singer who gravitates toward pieces that seem as though they could have been part of Donizettis creative process for an opera. Even in the more folkish material, like the gondola song Sullonda cheta e bruna, she brings a good deal of vibrato and heft, as well as some pitches that U.S. listeners might describe as close enough for government work. This, as compared to the cleaner approach of "baritenor" Michael Spyres on the previous volume, will be purely a matter of individual taste, but one may note here that Lemieux is well matched with a new and more activist accompanist, Giulio Zappa. The booklets for all volumes bring texts and a great deal of detail bringing alive this aspect of Donizettis world and work, which is all to the good.
