2018年にリリースしたセカンド・アルバム『サターン』が第62回グラミー賞＜最優秀アーバン・コンテンポラリー・アルバム＞部門や英音楽賞=マーキュリー・プライズで＜ベスト・アルバム・オブ・ザ・イヤー＞にノミネートされた、UK出身のネオ・ソウル・シンガー=NAO(ネイオ)。
2021年の『And Then Life Was Beautiful』以来、4作目となる最新アルバム『Jupiter』。今作は、精神的なテーマを掘り下げ、彼女の新たなる一面が表現されており、シングル「Wildflowers」、Stintプロデュースによる「Elevate」他を収録。「Jupiter(木星)は喜びに満ちていて、成長、拡大、自己変容の星。今作を聴いて、自己の喜びの波動が美しく変化するのを感じてもらえたら嬉しい。」と彼女自身は語っている。

The title of Naos third LP might be more suited for this follow-up. Before the release of And Then Life Was Beautiful in 2021, Nao publicized that she had been diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome. The symptoms had been affecting her for several years, and at their peak left her unable to tour, depleting her confidence in the process. Four years later, she re-emerged with her fourth album -- what she conceived as a sister release to 2018s Saturn -- and made it known that she had healed. Not coincidentally, Jupiter is an ebullient triumph, the singers most upbeat full-length. While Nao worked chiefly with longstanding partners such as LOXE, GRADES, and Stint, the results are quite different in comparison to her first three albums. This is generally more pop-oriented, often deviating far from R&B, and is considerably brighter all-around. Most surprising is that Nao delivers her grandest acrobatic vocal performance on whats essentially a country ballad, "30 Something," both a conflicted reminiscence on her twenties and a celebration of her growth and good fortune. A few songs are all about romantic bliss, leading with the capering "Wildflowers," continuing with the floating slow jams "Elevate" and "Just Dive," and extending to the gleaming title song. The Afrobeats-tinged "Happy People" and "We All Win" spread joy to a communal level. A couple other songs, while inviting, are over-sugared, and certain production choices, mainly with regard to vocal effects, dont play to Naos strengths. Hearing her so assured and exultant is no small consolation. ~ Andy Kellman

ロンドンのソングストレスが3年半ぶりに発表した通算4作目となるLA録音のアルバム。〈木星〉と題した今作は〈土星〉と名付けたセカンドの姉妹作で、私生活などで経験した苦難を経た後の喜びや成長を独特のエンジェル・ヴォイスで歌っていく。既聴感のある"Elevate"なども手掛けた馴染みのスティントらによるアフロビーツ調の"Happy People"、盟友グレイズが手掛けたアマピアノ風の"We All Win"などは楽曲自体が前向きで力強く、全編を通してジョイフルで開放感に溢れている。爽快なディスコ・ポップやカントリー風のバラードも含め、R&Bに執着しない自由な感覚が伝わってくる全方位型の快作だ。
