2024年9月よりLSOの首席指揮者に正式に就任したパッパーノ。2024年9月の来日公演では、パッパーノ・マジックと称される魔法のような指揮ぶりで、音符ひとつひとつが輝いているような音色をオーケストラから引き出し、聴衆を魅了しました。このたびの新譜は、ラヴェルの傑作管弦楽曲のひとつ、《ダフニスとクロエ》。ラヴェル一流の管弦楽、そして声楽アンサンブルも加わって描かれる人智を超えた不思議な力。パッパーノはひとつひとつの要素を繊細にきらめかせ、LSOからまさにマジックのように様々な音色を引き出しています。

《ダフニスとクロエ》は、素朴なヤギ飼いのダフニスと羊飼いのクロエとの、愛と憧れの物語。クロエが海賊に誘拐されたとき、ダフニスは助けるために高次の力を求めます。ここであらわされる自然の力は、ラヴェルの特徴である豊かなオーケストレーションと生き生きとしたメロディーで、見事に音符で描かれています。さらに、物語のここぞという場面でも印象的に挿入される声楽アンサンブルは、ナイジェル・ショートによって設立され、グラミー賞にノミネートされたこともある世界最高峰の声楽アンサンブル、テネブレが担当。圧巻の存在感を放っており、こちらも注目です。

The number of recordings of Ravels Daphnis et Chloe on the market approaches 200, with perhaps five earlier ones by the London Symphony Orchestra heard here. Yet this one by conductor Antonio Pappano promptly made classical best-seller charts after its release in February of 2025. The reasons are simple: Pappano is in perfect control of the orchestra, which delivers on everything he asks, and he gets the operatic sensuousness of this realization of ancient Greek erotic legend. The good news starts right at the beginning with the low string sounds that set the scene; these are pushed to the audience-drawing edge but not beyond. The London Symphonys strings and winds are perfectly smooth, and in the bigger passages of this "choreographic symphony," as Ravel put it, the brass deliver their music cleanly. The strongest attraction is that this music is indeed choreographic; the whole sequence feels like it unrolls through a series of dance scenes. The electricity present in a live performance is part of the draw, and one may note that the LSO Live engineers, working in the Barbican in April of 2024, celebrate the 25th anniversary of the label with great detail and precision. This is a marvelous job all around and a worthy addition to the collection of anyone who has a lot of Ravel, or for that matter, those for whom this would be an initial Daphnis et Chloe. ~ James Manheim
