ジョン・ウィルソンによるリチャード・ロドニー・ベネットの管弦楽作品シリーズ。この第5集には、1973年から1989年に作曲された3作品が収録されています。「管弦楽のための協奏曲」は、デンバー交響楽団の指揮者ブライアン・プリーストマンの委嘱で作曲された、近代オーケストラの卓越した技量が試される作品。。3楽章構成で、最後の楽章には華やかな変奏曲が置かれています。アルバムの中心となる「オルフェウスのソネット」は、ベネットが長年のパートナーとの別離を決意した時期に書かれたチェロ協奏曲。この作品はエディンバラ国際音楽祭の委嘱作で、1979年9月にハインリッヒ・シフによって初演されました。「ダイヴァージョンズ」は、スコットランド民謡に基づく華やかな交響的変奏曲で、北ロンドンのハバーダッシャーズ・アスク校が創立300周年記念として委嘱した作品です。ヨナハン・アースゴールはソリスト、室内楽奏者、教師として幅広く活躍するノルウェーのチェリストで、ロイヤル・リヴァプール・フィルハーモニー管弦楽団およびロンドン・シンフォニアの首席チェリストを務め、ギルドホール音楽演劇学校で教鞭をとっています。

Released early in 2025, this is the fifth volume in the Chandos labels ongoing series devoted to the orchestral music of Richard Rodney Bennett. Since the third volume, the series has been in the conducting hands of John Wilson. He is the one that might spring to mind for this music, even if there is little hint of popular music or jazz on this volume; he is a careful tracer of complex orchestral textures and rapid changes in mood, and there are plenty of both of those here. Chandos has done well to avoid pure chronological approaches to Bennetts orchestral music, and this volume offers an excellent example. All three of the works depend on sets of variations, with one, the Concerto for Orchestra of 1973, at the edge of tonality and dense orchestration (the opening of the first-movement Aubade has 12 tones); one, the Sonnets to Orpheus cello concerto of 1979, forecasting a move to a new lyricism on Bennetts part; and one, the Diversions for chamber orchestra of 1990, going into full folk territory with its basis in the Scottish folk tune Whistle, and Ill come to you, my lad. Despite the shifts in idiom, the music is recognizably the work of the same composer, and showing this seems to be the aim of Wilson and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. It is propulsive but with sudden shifts in tempo and mood, dense but appealing to the hearer, and marked by memorable orchestral details. The series may be a lot of Bennett for those not already converted to his music, but this release marks a key step in exploring his style.
