Lust for Life, Or: 'How To Thread The Needle And Come Out The Other Side To Tell The Story

Its hard for a band to be chaotic and precise at the same time, but Courting manage that feat like it was as simple as tying their shoes on their third album, 2025s Lust for Life, Or: How to Thread the Needle and Come out the Other Side to Tell the Story. Theres so much going on in many of the tracks that not everything comes into the focus on first listen (see if you can spot the sample from the Damneds "New Rose" -- its there if youre paying attention), and the heady mix of electronics, sampled breakbeats, distorted vocals, fiddles, and semi-organic guitars and drums in "Stealth Rollback" is some sort of triumph of organized noise. Its followed by the lean, spirited funk of "Pause at You," which is every bit as exciting even when it sounds like the bands fury could result in a massive explosion at any moment. The ideas that Courting were working with on 2022s Guitar Music and 2024s New Last Name are fully realized on Lust for Life, even as the music sounds more streamlined and direct than before. This music may have plenty of different elements moving around at the same time, but here theyre moving in the same direction (well, most of the time), and theyre put into the service of melodies that turn them into effective pop songs with a rock edge and impact, especially "Eleven Sent (This Time)" and the closer "Likely Place for Them to Be," which is a cranked-up reprise of the lead-off track, "Rollback Intro," and suggests Is This It-era Strokes with twice as much energy and four times the smarts. Sean Murphy-ONeill and Joshua Copes guitars are stripped-down but satisfyingly physical, the rhythm section of bassist Conor McCann and drummer Sean Thomas is versatile and effective in every context, and Murphy-ONeills lead vocals have an unforced insistence that works whether hes smirking or entirely sincere (and half the fun is trying to determine which is which). Lust for Life is weirdly joyous and joyously weird, and its marvelously entertaining either way; its the bands strongest and most cohesive work yet. ~ Mark Deming
