初期のダブ・シンジケートのアルバムをまとめたアンソロジー・ボックスセット「Ambience In Dub」(2017年リイシュー)に続き、1980年代後半からの作品をまとめた5枚組CDBOX『Out Here On The Perimeter 1989 -1996』の発売が決定。この作品は、スタイル・スコットがバンドリーダー兼共同プロデューサーとして主導権を握り、グループがライブバンドとして台頭した時代を記録している。この時期は彼らが最も人気を集めた時期でもあり、ジャマイカの卓越した演奏技術とUKプロデューサー、エイドリアン・シャーウッドによる実験的なスタジオ作業が融合した作品群となっている。今回のリイシューでは、以下の4枚のアルバムがオリジナルジャケットを忠実に再現し、更にインナースリーブには新たに制作された詳細なライナーノーツやアーカイブ写真も追加しアナログ盤として再発される。そして今回のスペシャルな企画としてエイドリアン・シャーウッドが当時のリズムを基にした新ヴァージョンを収録した特別なボーナスアルバムも制作。5枚のアルバムをまとめたCDボックスセットとしてリリース。

1.Strike The Balance (1989)
前作から4年ぶりのスタジオアルバムにして、1987年のリー・スクラッチ・ペリーとの共作『Time Boom X De Devil Dead』に続くリリース。ビム・シャーマンによる「Cuss Cuss」や、マッシブ・アタックの『Blue Lines』で知られるシャラ・ネルソンが参加する「Je T'aime」などを収録。この作品は、ダブ・シンジケートがツアーバンドとしての活動を本格化させた時期に発表された重要作。

2.Stoned Immaculate (1991)
ダブ・シンジケートの最も有名なアルバム。ジャマイカとロンドンで録音され、スタイル・スコットのリズムに加え、スキップ・マクドナルドのギター、リー・スクラッチ・ペリーやアカブのボーカル、プリンス・ファーライのサンプル、キース・レヴィンのキーボードが特徴です。レゲエとトリップアウトした電子音楽が融合したアルバムタイトル曲「Stoned Immaculate」は、世界各地のフェスティバルやサウンド・システムで人々を魅了。

3.Echomania (1993)
ルーツ・ラディックスとして活躍したスタイル・スコットとフラバ・ホルトによる力強いリズムが特徴。リー・スクラッチ・ペリー、タルヴィン・シンなどがゲスト参加。

4.Ital Breakfast (1996)
ルーツ・ラディックスやソウル・シンジケートなどの著名なジャマイカのミュージシャンたちが集結し、ロンドンのスキップ・マクドナルドやアカブも加わった真のトランス・アトランティック・ダブ作品。

5.Obscured By Version (2025)
1989～96年のリズムを基に制作された新ヴァージョン集。エイドリアン・シャーウッドがオリジナルテープを再構築し、新たにダブミックス。エイドリアン・シャーウッドとスタイル・スコットの長年の創造的パートナーシップを称える作品。

One of the flagship acts of the On-U Sound label, Dub Syndicate was centered around Jamaican drummer Style Scott, along with British producer Adrian Sherwood and numerous contributors from within his orbit, including members of other On-U projects like Creation Rebel and African Head Charge. Like those acts, Dub Syndicate pushed the limits of dub, firmly basing their music in reggae and Jamaican music traditions while piling on outlandish echo, samples, and sound effects. Sherwood often remixed or produced industrial acts like Ministry, Skinny Puppy, and Einsturzende Neubauten, and his Dub Syndicate work often mirrored his hard-edged production style in a reggae context. Out Here on the Perimeter 1989-1996 gathers music from the second phase of Dub Syndicates tenure on On-U Sound, before Style Scott founded his own Lion & Roots label and often made records without Sherwood. The late-80s/early-90s releases included input from Tackhead, the industrial hip-hop group founded by former members of the Sugar Hill Records house band, as well as Public Image Ltds Keith Levene. Dub Syndicates full-length collaborations with Lee "Scratch" Perry and Bim Sherman arent present, but Strike the Balance (1989), Stoned Immaculate (1991), Echomania (1993), and Ital Breakfast (1996) are all brilliant releases, essential to anyone interested in the outer limits of soundsystem culture. Strike the Balance is notable for the gorgeous, Sherman-sung classic "Mafia," the absurd and cartoon-like whimsy of "Boof Um Baff," and an interpretation of Serge Gainsbourgs "Je TAime" featuring Shara Nelson, shortly before her show-stopping appearances on Massive Attacks debut. Stoned Immaculate, named after a sampled Jim Morrison quote, is appropriately one of the groups more psychedelic efforts, and the presence of vocals by the late Prince Far I adds a level of poignant depth. Echomania is easily one of Dub Syndicates best, filling out the groups rich, textural sound with tabla playing from Talvin Singh, and featuring two guest appearances from Perry, including his wackiest performance ever, the hilarious "Dubbing Psycho Thriller." Michael Franti, then of Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy and soon of Spearhead, also shows up on "No No," delivering conscious rhymes reflecting the American political climate at the time. Ital Breakfast goes further into political subject matter on songs like "The Corporation" (co-written by Mark Stewart) and a pair of tracks condemning guns. Theres also an appearance by I-Roy, foreshadowing the more dancehall-influenced direction Dub Syndicate would later take, and a recycled Perry cameo. Also included in the box is Obscured by Version, Sherwoods freshly recorded revisit of Dub Syndicate rhythms and vibes from the same era of these albums, which stays true to the groups original sound while twisting the material in new directions. Final track "Intercommunications" is a riff on the groups magnificent 1987 non-album single "Night Train," which wouldve made a nice addition to the box set. Still, Out Here on the Perimeter 1989-1996 contains some of the best dub music created after the genres initial wave during the 70s. ~ Paul Simpson
