2005年54歳の若さで逝去したR&Bシンガー=ルーサー・ヴァンドロスのドキュメンタリー映画『Luther:Never Too Much』(監督:ドーン・ポーター/音楽監督:ロバート・グラスパー)がアメリカで11月より公開(日本での公開は未定)。マライア・キャリー、ロバータ・フラック、ジェイミー・フォックス、リチャード・マークス、ディオンヌ・ワーウィック、マーカス・ミラー等、仕事仲間、影響を受けた多くのアーティストの証言や、豊富なアーカイブから40年以上にわたるキャリアを追い、創作の裏側と知られざる素顔に迫った作品。この映画公開に合わせ、ルーサーのキャリアを網羅する最新ベスト・アルバム『Never Too Much: Greatest Hits』がリリース。ドキュメンタリーに使用された楽曲のスタジオ・バージョンに加え、1989年6月にレコーディングされたビートルズの名曲「Michelle」のカヴァーを含む4曲の未発表曲も収録。

Never Too Much: Greatest Hits is not to be confused with Greatest Hits 1981-1995 (1995), Greatest Hits (1999), The Greatest Hits (2014), Never Too Much: The Soul of Luther Vandross (2009), or, most obviously, Never Too Much, Luther Vandross multi-platinum debut album. Its a companion to Dawn Porters revelatory 2024 documentary Luther: Never Too Much, and covers a fair amount of ground, from "Never Too Much," Vandross 1981 solo breakthrough, to 2003s "Dance with My Father," his final Top 40 single. Vandross catalog is so deep that one could select 20 of his songs at random with a decent chance of getting an equally adequate representation as a result. [Nineteen tracks are on the double-vinyl edition. The CD version, also on two discs, adds a radio edit of "Michelle." Considering that Vandross quantity of Top Ten R&B hits greatly exceeds the number of tracks here, and that five of the singers studio albums (such as his indispensable second and fourth) are not represented, too much valuable space is taken by inessential collector bait. The exception is a self-produced version of the Beatles "Michelle," a lovely 1989 recording discovered by childhood friend and frequent collaborator Fonzi Thornton. It also over-emphasizes the duets and interpretations, with low-charting versions of Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaways "The Closer I Get to You" (with Beyonce) and Heatwaves "Always and Forever" squeezing out original certifiable hits like "Its Over Now" and "I Really Didnt Mean It."
