スメタナは今年(2024年)に生誕200年、歿後140年を迎えました。当アルバムは2022/23年シーズンから首席指揮者兼音楽監督を務めるペトル・ポペルカ率いるプラハ放送交響楽団の3枚組。同コンビは2024年7月の来日公演でも披露した『わが祖国』が話題となりました。

プラハ放送交響楽団やウィーン交響楽団の首席指揮者を務めるほか、ヨーロッパやアメリカの著名なオーケストラや世界中の歌劇場にも客演しているポペルカ。母国が生んだ作曲家スメタナの作品は並々ならぬ思いをもって演奏しております。当アルバムにはスメタナの初期の音楽、24歳の皇帝フランツ・ヨーゼフ1世とバイエルン王女エリザベートの結婚式に捧げられた「祝典交響曲」、シェイクスピアの「リチャード3世」、シラーの「ワレンシュタインの陣営」にはじまり、スメタナ壮年期の作品、弦楽四重奏曲第1番『わが生涯より』のジョージ・セルによる見事な管弦楽版、そして「わが祖国」全曲も収録しております。スメタナに対するポペルカの細部にまでこだわった深い愛情を感じる演奏です。

Lots of young conductors are coming along to stake out a presence as the giants in the Czech Republic slow down. Is Petr Popelka, the new conductor of the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra, emerging at the top of this heap? From this 2024 release, it seems he may already be there. He gets absolutely top-notch playing in Ma Vlast, presented in its entirety at the end of the program. As good a place as any to start is Vltava ("The Moldau"), where the big tune is precisely and elegantly set up. Also, hear the programmatic and dramatic Šarka that follows, which takes on an almost operatic quality in Popelkas hands. Of equal interest is the first half of the program, with some orchestral works that have received undeserved neglect. Consider the Festive Symphony in E major, Op. 6, which was turned down by the Austro-Hungarian monarchy for its insufficient highlighting of patriotic tunes and bombed when Smetana presented it independently. He was right all along. It is not yet a nationalist work, but it has a rhythmic peppiness (hear the shifts in the opening movement) that suggests what was to come. Another highlight is George Szells orchestration of the String Quartet No. 1 in E minor ("From My Life"), which loses the intensely autobiographical quality of the quartet version, which depicts in an excruciating way the onset of Smetanas deafness. However, it substitutes that for a more general drama that, to these ears, and apparently Popelkas (the version is not often played), works great. There are also small pieces -- try the programmatic but not trite Wallensteins Camp, Op. 14 -- that reveal other sides of Smetanas character. A finely wrought survey of Smetanas orchestral music that will bring new material even to fans of the composer. ~ James Manheim
