多彩なDJを起用し話題となっているドイツのベルリンを拠点とする名門レーベル!K7の名盤MIX CDシリーズ『DJキックス』。今回はロンドンを拠点とするDJ兼プロデューサーのスティーブン・ジュリアン!スティーブンはロンドン拠点の音楽レーベル「エープロン・レコーズ(Apron Records)」の主宰やフローティング・ポインツ(Floating Points)が主宰するレーベル「エグロ・レコーズ(Eglo Records)」で作品を発表等、幅広く活躍～数々の功績を残している。世界中のクラブでプレイしてきた中で、彼は常に光と闇、ソフトとハード、陰と陽を織り交ぜてきた。ラフなハウスやテクノから、ゆったりとしたソウルやブギーまで、あるいは2018年のアルバム『Bloodline』で家族や音楽の遺産について瞑想するなど、ジュリアンの音楽は常にムード、スタイル、感情の間を揺れ動いている。!K7の象徴的なDJ-Kicksミックス・シリーズでも、その折衷主義がジュリアンを定義している。レコード化されていない坂本龍一の音源や、DaM-FunK、トッド・エドワーズなどこのDJキックスでしか聞けない楽曲をフィーチャーし、ジュリアンは私たちを昼から夜への想像の旅へと誘う。自然の中の牧歌的な午後から、大きな夜のお出かけ前の慌ただしい家庭のヴァイブス、そして最後にはダンスフロアそのものへの陶酔の抱擁まで。ジュリアンは、一般的なDJプレイ、特にこのミックスに対するクリエイティブなアプローチについて、自分のエネルギーと直感に任せていると語っている。完成したセッションを聴き返して初めて、彼がいかに頻繁にトラックをキーにミックスし、ある瞬間から次の瞬間へのスムーズな移行を生み出しているかに気づいた。シームレスなミキシングが第二の天性となるような本能的なアプローチは、ジュリアンが10年にわたり世界中のDJブースに出演してきたことを物語っている。このミックスの具体的なインスピレーションとして、彼はロンドンのOrmside Projects、アムステルダムのDokaとDe School、東京のMitsukiでのセットを挙げている。ジュリアンは、テープに収めようとした感覚を、体外離脱のようなエネルギーと表現している。「自分にとって本当のことをする、自分にとって本当のことを演奏する、そういう立場になったとき、人はそれに共鳴するんだ」と彼は言う。さらにこのMIXにしかない 『PAYN ME MIND ft. Previously known as FunkinEven and an early signee to Floating Points Eglo Records, Steven Julien is a longtime NTS Radio host who founded Apron Records in 2011. His music has always veered between futuristic funk, wonky R&B, and left-field house, and his DJ sets similarly pull from numerous genres and eras. A natural choice for the DJ-Kicks series, Julien presents an eclectic, fun mix that feels whimsical and spontaneous. It starts out a bit more on the reserved side, leaning towards R&B-influenced material, including a surprisingly radio-friendly new jack swing tune from the mid-90s by Ryuichi Sakamoto. Then theres vintage synth-funk from the RAH Band and Juliens hallucinatory remix of dreamcastmoe and Shungus "Pray 4 My Friends." Suze Ijos "Call Me," with its shimmering keys and gentle touch tones, slips the mix into a house current, which continues with a jazzy Chaos in the CBD cut and a very Underground Resistance-sounding goodie from Brothermartino. An exclusive cut from Julien, "Number," is a vivid throwback to the early days of house, complete with orchestra stabs. Theres classic garage from Todd Edwards, gliding dancefloor funk from DaM-Funk, and smooth Afro-house from Kokoroko, as remixed by Stefan Ringer and Ash Lauryn. The dancefloor gets warmer and steamier, and Julien is in full crowd-pleaser mode when he pulls out the 90s filter-house gem "Venus Sunshine People" by Cheek, followed by the punchy electro-funk of Mr Flashs "Disco Dynamite." The mix makes its comedown with an atmospheric drumnbass treat from Devin Morrison, then another Sakamoto piece, also from 1995s Smoochy, but this time a windswept ambient reflection titled "Rio." Julien has a natural instinct for selecting creative, good-vibes-only music, and his DJ-Kicks is a joyous, boundaryless set. ~ Paul Simpson

ファンキンイーヴン名義や自身のレーベル=エープロンを拠点に活躍の場を広げるロンドンのDJ/プロデューサーが伝統のミックス・シリーズに見参。緩やかな序盤を抜けて、数曲でピークに昇り詰めると緩急自在の手綱捌きで展開し、着地も見事。坂本龍一を2曲取り上げたあたりに故人への想いも窺え、こうしたところもDJミックスの醍醐味と言えるだろう。
