Arranger: Jonathan Tunick.
Kiri Te Kanawa's recording of Irving Berlin songs, KIRI SINGS BERLIN, is much in the same vein as Sylvia McNair's recordings of Jerome Kern and Harold Arlen songs: carefully chosen keys and close microphones allow the singer to do things which would never carry in a live performance, but with beautiful results.
The program, assembled in collaboration with arranger and conductor Jonathan Tunick, includes fifteen Berlin songs from the romance of "What'll I Do?" to the dancing charm of "Cheek to Cheek." Although Berlin may be known today for the songs featured in the films 'White Christmas' (1954) and 'Holiday Inn' (1942) which appear on television every December, all but four of the songs predate both movies. Tunick's orchestrations use varied ensembles, from a lush complement of strings for a Nelson Riddle-type sound in the ballads to a dance orchestra for the up-tempo numbers.
"Crossover" albums of this type may not be to everyone's taste, but Te Kanawa's singing and Tunick's able accompaniments make this disc an elegant and lovely addition to the catalog.
