ニジェールから世界へ羽ばたく異色バンド、エムドゥ・モクターが『Funeral for Justice』に続く続編作品『Tears of Injustice』をリリース!

ニジェール共和国のサイケ・ヒーローにして、2019年に世界的にブレイクしたアルバム『Afrique Victime』など、今世界で最も注目を集めるエムドゥ・モクターが、『Funeral for Justice』に続く続編作品『Tears of Injustice』を〈Matador〉よりリリース。
本作は、アコースティック楽器と伝統楽器用に新たにアレンジ・再レコーディングしたものであり、批評家から高く評価された作品『Funeral for Justice』の進化版であり、エネルギッシュなオリジナルの反対をいく内省的かつ対照的な内容になっている。
『Funeral for Justice』では、ニジェールの苦境に対する怒りや、トゥアレグ族の人々の怒りが、音楽のボリュームやスピードに端的に表れている。『Tears of Injustice』では、曲の重みは健在だが、音が増幅されているわけではない。その音は、悲しみに満ちており、貧困、植民地による搾取、そして政治的動乱の絶え間ない渦中にある国民の悲しみを伝えている。これはトゥアレグ族による、生々しく本質的なプロテスト・ミュージックなのだ。彼らは『Tears of Injustice』のレコーディングを、みんなで同じ部屋に入って行うことにした。セッションを、ゆるく、無駄をそぎ落とし、自発的なものにしたのだ。「事前にアレンジを練ったりはしなかった」とコルタンは振り返る。「ただ演奏して、感触を確かめ、曲を作っていった」作業はすぐにまとまり、主要なレコーディングはわずか2日間で終了した。「Imouhar」の催眠術のような8分のテイクは、実際には2つの異なるパートを連続して演奏したものだ。モクターが、テイクを区切るために十分な時間を置かずに、演奏を続けてしまったのも一因だ。1ヵ月後、バンドはニジェールに帰国することができたが、その際、コルタンはマダサネにズーム・レコーダーを持たせた。リズム・ギタリストであるマダサネは、それを使ってトゥアレグ族のグループによるコール・アンド・レスポンス・ヴォーカルを録音し、後にそれを最終的なミックスに加えた。

Issuing an acoustic version of a popular album has become increasingly common in Western pop and rock music. At its best, it can be revelatory and fresh, offering listeners an alternate creative vision that stands up to the original. Most of the time, though, its merely content, serving as a bland industry stopgap until something more substantial can be released. Tears of Injustice -- Mdou Moctars acoustic reimagining of his 2024 album Funeral for Justice -- falls squarely into the former and is yet another example of how this remarkable West African artist has cunningly adapted his approach to engage the Western world. Prior to the release of Funeral for Justice, Moctar and his band were touring the U.S. when a military junta temporarily locked them out of Niger. They had already landed on the idea to make a companion to their then-finished electric album, and since they were unable to return home, they booked time at a Brooklyn studio to record a spontaneous stripped-down version of the songs theyd been honing on stages across America. In some ways, its a brilliant move for Moctar, a supremely talented guitarist whose reputation for face-melting solos threatens to eclipse his gift for songwriting. On acoustic guitar, hes just as nimble, but the focus shifts more overtly toward his yearning songs of oppression and the search for unity. In its original iteration, "Funeral for Justice" is a fiery condemnation of African leaders. Stripped of its distortion, the song becomes a skewed reflection of the original, its tone more measured and meditative. Traditional hand drums stand in for a drum kit, and the tempos are uniformly slower and looser. The surprising eight-minute version of "Imouhar" is actually two passes of the same song. Halfway through, you can hear Moctar keeping the riff alive, urging his bandmates to give it another go, an indication of the hive-mind nature of a tight touring band. Whats unique here is how the group emphasizes its members different energies, almost unconsciously. "Oh France," one of Funerals more scintillating tracks, is no less effective in its acoustic guise; the new version is just as insistent, replacing volume with compressed intensity. These may be the same songs in the same sequence as Funeral for Justice, but they have the character of an entirely different album, and thats a tough feat to pull off. ~ Timothy Monger

〈砂漠のジミヘン〉と謳われるニジェール共和国のギター・ヒーロー、エムドゥ・モクターを擁する4人組が、アコースティック及び伝統楽器を使って前作『Funeral For Justice』を再レコーディング。モクターのルーツである西アフリカの遊牧民、トゥアレグ族のコール&レスポンスを加えたことによって、曲が持つ民族音楽の要素とヒプノティックな魅力が際立った印象だ。サイケな音像や演奏の躍動感を聴かせる曲もあるから、単なる前作のアコースティック・ヴァージョンとは考えないほうがいい。終始、鳴り続けるプロデューサー兼ベーシスト、マイキー・コルタンのぶっといベースの音に思わずニヤリ。
