シュールでアートな音世界で、独自のサイケデリックな摩訶不思議ワールドを極め続ける、現代のカルト・アイコン、ザ・フレーミング・リップス。鬼才ウェイン・コイン率いる彼らが2002年に発表した通算10作目となるスタジオ・アルバムにして、そのエレクトロでサイケデリックなインディ・ロック・サウンドが非常に高い評価を受け、彼らをメインストリームのバンドへと押し上げた名作『YOSHIMI BATTLES THE PINK ROBOTS』は、今もなおシーンの金字塔的作品として非常に高い評価を受け、時代を超えてファンを魅了し続ける作品だ。

2023年、この名作の発売20周年を記念したスーパー・デラックス・エディションがリリースされたのだが、今回、このアルバムにDOLBY ATMOSミックスが施されて、かつてないほどの没入感を味わえる究極の万華鏡的空間へと聴くものを誘ってくれる作品『YOSHIMI BATTLES THE PINK ROBOTS [BLU-RAY]』となって登場することとなった!

この名作がイマーシヴ・サウンドとなって生まれ変わることとなるこのBLU-RAYエディションには、デイヴ・フリッドマンとATMOSエンジニア兼マスタリング・エンジニアのジョン・フリッドマンによるDolby ATMOSミックスを始め、デイヴ・フリッドマンとエリオット・シャイナーによるDTS-HD 5.1ミックス、さらにデイヴ・フリッドマンによるDTS-HD 2.0ハイレゾ・ステレオ・ミックスが収録されている。

さらにこのBLU-RAYには、「Bleep Blops」のビジュアライザー・アニメーションを始め、新たにリマスターが施された「Fight Test」、「Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots Pt.1」、「Are You A Hypnotist?」、そして「Do You Realize?」の2ヴァージョンのミュージック・ビデオが収録されている。また、パッケージにはウェイン・コインがジョンとデイヴ・フリッドマンに行った、Atmosミックスについて、そしてこの全く新しいリスニング体験についてのインタビューを掲載。

遡ること2002年7月にリリースされたこの『YOSHIMI BATTLES THE PINK ROBOTS』は、ザ・フレーミング・リップスのワイルドな25年の旅路において、商業的に最も成功した作品だ。グラミー賞受賞を誇る彼らに、全米レコード協会認定のゴールド・レコードをもたらした。1999年の傑作『The Soft Bulletin』に続く作品として、シンガー/ギタリストのウェイン・コインと、マルチ・プレイヤーのスティーヴン・ドローズは、期待を裏切ることなく、さらなる傑作を生みだしたのである。

『YOSHIMI BATTLES THE PINK ROBOTS』は、ザ・フレーミング・リップスの、アンビエントなエレクトロ・サウンドと、デジタル・ビート、そしてサイケな輝きが摩訶不思議に渦巻いた、遊び心溢れつつも深遠なテーマ性を持った楽曲たちを配役した、SFをテーマにしたコンセプト・アルバムのような作品だ。本作からは、バンドの代表曲である「Do You Realize??」(2009年にバンドの故郷であるオクラホマの公式ロック・ロングに認定された、タイムレスな輝きを誇るアンセム)が生まれ、アルバムを締めくくるコズミックなインスト楽曲「Approaching Pavonis Mons by Balloon (Utopia Planitia)」は、リップスに初のグラミー賞をもたらした。

After the symphonic majesty of The Soft Bulletin, the Flaming Lips returned with Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, a sublime fusion of Bulletins newfound emotional directness, the old-school playfulness of Transmissions From the Satellite Heart, and exciting expressions of the groups emotional and experimental style. While the album isnt as immediately impressive as The Soft Bulletin, its arguably more consistent, using a palette of rounded, surprisingly emotive basslines, squelchy analog synths, and pristine acoustic guitars on songs like "One More Robot/Sympathy 3000-21," a sleekly melancholy tale of robots developing emotions, and "In the Morning of the Magicians," an aptly named electronic art rock epic that sounds like a collaboration between the Moody Blues and Wendy Carlos. Paradoxically, the Lips use simpler arrangements to create more diverse sounds on Yoshimi, spanning the lush, psychedelic reveries of "Its Summertime"; the dubby "Are You a Hypnotist?"; and the barely organized chaos of "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Pt. 2," which defeats the evil metal ones with ferocious drums, buzzing synths, and the formidable howl of the Boredoms Yoshimi. Few bands can write life-affirming songs about potentially depressing subjects (the passage of time, fighting for what you care about, good vs. evil) like the Flaming Lips, and on Yoshimi, theyre at the top of their game. "Do You Realize??" is the standout, so immediately gorgeous that its obvious that its the single. Its also the most clearly influenced by The Soft Bulletin, but its even catchier and sadder, sweetening such unavoidable truths like "Do you realize that everyone you know someday will die?" with chimes, clouds of strings, and angelic backing vocals. Yoshimi features some of the sharpest and most complex emotional peaks and valleys of any Lips album. "Fight Test" seems whimsical on the surface but packs a bittersweet punch, while poignant songs like "All We Have Is Now" and "Ego Tripping at the Gates of Hell" are leavened by witty lyrics and production tricks. Funny, beautiful, and moving, Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots finds the Flaming Lips continuing to grow and challenge themselves after delivering a masterpiece. ~ Heather Phares
