Jorge Reyes' opening salvo for Australia's Extreme label continues the pre-Hispanic quests he has been mounting throughout his recorded oeuvre. Fellow sound painters Steve Roach and Elmar Schulte help to make an already panoramic sound palette even richer with idiomatic drones and deep-space synthetics. But it is the singular approach that Reyes applies to his music that gives EL COSTUMBRE its ritualistic flavor. Reyes strums, taps, and juggles a dazzling variety of percussion devices, tossing them into twilight zones of trumpets, flutes, and electronics. The immediacy and timeless essence Reyes exults in this music makes it seem as though a listener is actually present at the inaugural rite of a titular god. Ambience for the ancient masses? Quite possibly. If so, Reyes fits the bill as the mystic's tribal orchestrator.
