イヴ・カスタニェ: マニフィカト

パリ・ノートルダム大聖堂修復再開記念のための壮大なるマニフィカト

パリ・ノートルダム大聖堂聖歌隊は、この寺院の支持者によって約800年の伝統が守られています。12世紀創設以来の歴史を持つこの合唱団は、中世から現代作曲家の作品まで幅広いレパートリーを持っており、ミサなどで歌われています。
2019年の壊滅的な火災から5年半後の2024年12月8日、偉大なノートルダム大聖堂が再び一般に公開されます。修復作業はまだ進行中ですが、プロジェクト責任者のフィリップ・ジョストは、大聖堂が約900年前に設計された本来の姿、すなわち「壮大で、高く、広く、光に満ちた姿」に戻ることを約束しています。
再開を正式に記念するのは、オルガニストで作曲家のイヴ・カスタニェによる新しい『マニフィカト』の合唱作品の発表です。カスタネは1988年以来、ノートルダム大聖堂の合唱オルガニストの役職に就いており、大聖堂付属の合唱学校「ラ・メトリーズ・ノートルダム・ド・パリ」の指導も行っています。
『マニフィカト』の最初の公開演奏は2025年秋まで行われません。これは、ノートルダムの合唱オルガンがまだ修理中であり、火災で大量の煤や水による被害を受けたため、再建に時間を要しています。
この録音は、ノートルダムの仮の拠点であるサント・クロチルド聖堂で行われ、カスタニェ自身がオルガンを演奏しています。この聖堂のオルガンは、著名なアリスティード・カヴァイエ=コルによって1850年代に建設され、セザール・フランクは30年以上にわたってこの大聖堂のオルガニストを務めました。
「マニフィカトは、私の日常生活の中で30年以上にわたり寄り添ってきました。実際、このテキストはカトリックの典礼において毎日使用され、毎晩、晩課の一環として歌われます。そして毎晩、ノートルダム大聖堂での礼拝の一部として、オルガンでマニフィカトの歌を伴奏しています。聖母マリア自身の言葉が、彼女に捧げられたこの大聖堂で歌われる…このテキストの力強さと美しさに心を動かされずにはいられません」と、カスタニェは語っています。

This 2024 Warner Classics release gained considerable publicity by virtue of its appearance in conjunction with the reopening of Notre-Dame Cathedral at the end of that year. It was not recorded at Notre-Dame, which was still under repair, but at the Basilica of Sainte-Clotilde, the temporary home of the cathedrals liturgical operations and, as it turns out, an absolutely wonderful venue acoustically. It is to be hoped that the singers of La Maitrise Notre-Dame de Paris will use it for future productions, for its organ comes through in beautifully crisp tones that stand up to the singing. The organ is skillfully exploited here by composer Yves Castagnet, Notre-Dames longtime organist, who also turned to composition later in his career. His settings of the Magnificat and of three Psalms that close out the program, falling into the grand tradition of French organ composers, feature long organ introductions and pedal points above which the young singers of the La Maitrise choir school seem to soar. Director Henri Chalet gets a unique sound from his choristers; its quite distinct from the choral singing in English cathedrals, leaving room for the grain of an individual voice to emerge from the texture. This choir has not recorded very frequently, and right now its hard to say whether the singers always sound this great or whether they were inspired to new heights by the gravity of the occasion. Either way, this is an album that demands to be heard, and a grand souvenir of the remarkable rebuilding of Notre-Dame de Paris. ~ James Manheim
