Great singer, great songwriter, great guitarist--Bobby Womack has worn many hats over the years, and deserves respect from those who walk erect if for no other reason than writing "It's All Over Now," thus inspiring the Rolling Stones to record their first great single. Womack, of course, has done lots of other important things as well, and most of them (including his own version of "It's All Over Now," done as a duet with Bill Withers) are included on this all-but-definitive two-CD greatest hits album.
Highlights include his gorgeous theme to the classic blaxploitation flick "Across 110th Street," which Quentin Tarantino revived to great effect in the credits sequence of his own JACKIE BROWN. The hit version of "Lookin' For a Love" (originally a gospel song, and it shows) is also here, while the title song, better known as a hit for Wilson Pickett, grooves along nicely, and "Harry Hippie" sounds as cautionary as ever. Just about everything here has soul to spare.
