Taking a number of sound sources--samples, original instrumentation, old-school scratches, and ambient noise--and throwing them in a blender, DJ Spooky (who adds the unwieldy moniker "That Subliminal Kid" to his title--his "real" name is Paul D. Miller) makes incredibly dense, complex music. SYNTHETIC FURY is an EP that, in a mere half-hour, manages to cover more ground than most records twice its length.
The seven tracks run together with barely a pause between them. Two of them--"You Are About to Witness" (its title coming from the same sample that introduced N.W.A.'s STRAIGHT OUT OF COMPTON album) and "Demonseed"-- are very short introductory pieces, while "Last Element" provides a sort of epilogue. The remaining four tracks cover a number of different moods, sometimes within one song. "Sum Ill Shit" is a spacious dub mix that suggests the ambient sounds of a trendy cocktail lounge for the machines that run automated factories. The title track, on the other hand, is built on a frenzied set of electronically enhanced beats, full of smooth but odd time-signature changes, and shot through with some backwards masking that sounds like very aggressive bubbles. This is a great introduction to the subliminal, spooky world of the Kid.
