モーツァルト: ピアノ協奏曲第20番&第23番、ピアノ・ソナタ K.545

4年ぶりとなる新作はモーツァルトの名ピアノ協奏曲二篇

ジョージア出身のピアニスト、カティア・ブニアティシヴィリ。その美貌と美しくもダイナミズムあふれるパフォーマンスで人気が高いカティアのひさしぶりとなるアルバムが登場。前作『ラビリンス』(2020年)から4年。待たれていたカティアの8作目にあたるニュー・アルバムは待望のモーツァルト・アルバムとなった。カティアの協奏曲録音はこれまでショパンの第2番、ラフマニノフの第2番と第3番があるが、それらはすべて名指揮者パーヴォ・ヤルヴィのバトンによるものだった。今回のモーツァルトでは、イギリスの名門室内管弦楽団であるアカデミー・オブ・セント・マーティン・イン・ザ・フィールズを、カティア自らが指揮をしながらピアノ・ソロを披露する。モーツァルトのピアノ協奏曲の中でもっとも人気が高いのが第20番。モーツァルトの数少ない短調の作品で、劇的な表現が特徴だが、その第二楽章のメロディは優雅で映画音楽にも使われた。第23番もモーツァルトの後期のピアノ協奏曲の中ではその完成度の高さで人気の1曲。フィルアップは「初心者のためのやさしいソナタ」の副題で呼ばれることもあるハ長調K.545のソナタ。

The mid-2020s have found their controversial pianist, now that few would deny the talents of Yuja Wang; the recordings and performances of Khatia Buniatishvili, who proudly proclaims herself unbound by tradition, are received in equal measure with passionate denunciation and identification of the pianist as the greatest thing since sliced bread (or perhaps since khachapuri). Controversy is all to the good, and now listeners can sample the ideas of Buniatishvili, previously known for fiery performances of late 19th century repertory, as applied to Mozart. Disregard for tradition is certainly present; Buniatishvili adds some bass octaves at the ends of both concertos here (this is really not necessary), and she takes all repeats in the Piano Sonata in C major, K. 545, something that is quite rarely done. Bizarre graphics are part of the package. Her general approach to Mozart is highly expressive, with just a hint of tempo rubato introduced in an enthusiastic approach to the tunes that emerge in the outer movements (sample the F major material in the finale of the Piano Concerto in D major, K. 466). Her slow movement in the Piano Concerto No. 23 in A major, K. 488, is quite profound. Buniatishvili plays the solo part and conducts the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, and whatever ones convictions about her unique approach to the music, it is hard to deny that she has impressive control over her orchestra, which delivers a performance of these works quite unlike any other. One might also observe that she seems to act from a real sense of love for the music, and that her final C major sonata has an entrancing effect. This is not Buniatishvilis usual stomping around, but she remains as defiantly original as ever. ~ James Manheim
