Though Lee "Scratch" Perry shares cover credit with fellow producer/mixer Bullwackie on SATAN'S DUB, be apprised that this is Perry's record all the way. These 12 tracks are prime Perry, filled with all of his sonic trademarks: booming, echoey bass, skittering percussion, random and meandering stream-of-consciousness toasts, and unpredictable sound effects. Gunshots, squalling babies, creaking doors, breaking glass, and other, less-identifiable noises come springing crazily out of this record like surprises in a haunted house. The dubs are rock solid, with Perry's usual session crew, the Upsetters, playing in their heavy but graceful manner. Every track is a gold mine, but "Satan Dub" is among Perry's most legendary cuts. Ranting like he's just come face to face with the titular character, Perry delivers stinging lines over one of the most hard-hitting rhythm tracks of his career. It's truly a masterpiece, and the rest of SATAN'S DUB measures up.
