This 1996 reissue of LIVE AT MAX'S KANSAS CITY '79 includes five previously-unreleased tracks ("All By Myself," "Pirate Love," "Too Much Junkie Business," "Don't Mess With Cupid" and "So Alone") recorded during a later Heartbreakers stand at Max's Kansas City. They were originally intended for an EP to be called LIVE AT MAX'S KANSAS CITY VOLUME II. The EP was never released. Recording information: Max's, Kansas City (1979). Photographers: Bob Gruen; William Coupon. Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers were notoriously sloppy onstage--and offstage, for that matter. But when they were on, they were possibly the best band in New York. For most of LIVE AT MAX'S KANSAS CITY '79, they are very much on, in their own devolved way. For example, a slurred "Can't Keep My Eyes on You" turns into "Can't Keep My **** In You," and a Chuck Berry classic becomes the much more apposite "Too Much Junkie Business." A smoking version of "Chinese Rocks," Thunders' seriocomic ode to heroin co-written with fellow junkie Dee Dee Ramone, is the set's highpoint, followed closely by the sneering "Get off the Phone." This CD reissue has five more tracks than the original cassette version, along with significantly improved sound that lets you hear the combative stage banter in its full glory.
