Originally released in 1995, SLAPPING PYTHAGORAS marked Conrad's first widely distributed recorded work in 23 years, and greatly solidified his reputation as one of the leading lights of American experimental music. Though these dense, droning compositions bear a rough structural similarity to his microtonal experiments of the late `60s and early `70s, on SLAPPING PYTHAGORAS the stark minimalism of his violin-centric early recordings is replaced by a mesmerizing, occasionally overwhelming wall of sound. Though some will undoubtedly find this music almost unapproachably dissonant, the basic principles at work here have provided the foundation for much of the more forward-looking rock and experimental music of the last half century. Groundbreaking acts like The Velvet Underground, Faust, Neu!, The Silver Apples, and countless others have all drawn inspiration from Conrad's work, and the ecstatic reception enjoyed by SLAPPING PYTHAGORAS provided long overdue critical vindication for this seminal but controversial artist.
