まさかまさか!そのまさかである。西アフリカのハイライフやアフロビートを追いかける筆者のような好事家ファンにとっては、とりわけ歓喜であり仰天であり衝撃的なニュース。エイドリアン・ヤングとアリ・シャヒード・ムハンマドが、エボ・テイラーとレコーディングをする日が来るとは…。スターゲイザーズ、ブロードウェイ(のちのウフル・ダンス・バンド)といった60'sの名門ハイライフ楽団でギタリスト&コンポーザーとして活動を始めたテイラーは、独立したてのガーナとそこで鳴らされたハイライフの温度感を知る文字通りの生き字引。同時代を生きたフェラ・クティからの影響を十二分に受け取り、自身のハイライフを独自のアフロビート、アフロファンクへと発展させた。2000年代初頭に再評価されると、耳に残る印象的なイントロやフックをもった知られざるナンバーは、ヒップホップやR&Bのトラックメーカーからもサンプリング・ソースとして重宝された。

今作にもサンプリング・ネタとして有名なテイラー屈指のマスターピース「LOVE and DEATH」を引用した「Obi Do Woa (If Somoene Loves You)」が収録されている。タイトでスリリングなドラムとコンガ、サイケデリックなファズ・ギターとシンセのアンサンブルがまるで渦を巻くようで、円熟味を増しまくったテイラーのボーカルに胸打ち震えるような素晴らしい曲だ。これだけでも内容の充実具合を推し量ることができるってものである。何十年後も振り返って聴かれるに違いない歴史的な作品なので、どうか買い逃しなく。

In 2022, Ghanas Ebo Taylor traveled to the United States for the first time to play a concert at L.A.s Jazz Is Dead venue. He was 88. Following that successful evening. JID producers/label bosses Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad brought him into their recording studio along with his son, the pianist and music director Henry Taylor, a host of Ghanaian singers, bassist Emmanuel Akon, brass, reeds, winds, and Ghanaian drummer Philip Andy Biney. Ebo Taylor Jazz Is Dead 022 introduces the third series of albums from the label. The seven-song set clocks in at only 27 minutes. Younge and Muhammad focus on the sounds of Taylors pioneering 1970s albums that presented a propulsive fusion of psychedelic soul, funk, and Afrobeat. A Farfisa organ, synth, and electric bass vamp introduce "Get Up," joined by a vocal chorus on the refrain. Taylor engages in recitative singing as his chorus buoys his vocal over the drum kit, congas, and other percussion. Solos from flutist Katisse Buckingham, baritone saxophone, and trombones add a jazz flavor. The tunes sound recalls early Osibisa arrangements. The steaming groove picks up in striated fashion on "Obra Akyedzi." The baritones and alto play in chorus with trumpet and trombones, offering a harmonic cacophony that frames Taylors moaning vocal (in English and Igbo) atop a soaring vocal chorale. Buckingham fills the gaps between horns, vocals, and the bubbling rhythms. "Kusi Na Sibo" is introduced by bass and swelling horns before the congas announce a breakdown and the tune is reborn as a deliciously funky Afrobeat cooker. "Obi Do Woa (Somebody Loves You)" commences with a Motown-esque horn vamp before organ, roiling bass, and wah-wah guitar bring the funk. The chorus sings in percussive phrases as Taylor offers an incantatory vocal over saxophones and brass before Buckingham comes in to solo over a furious psychedelic Afrobeat jam. "Nsa a w’oanye edwuma, ondzidz" is the sets longest cut at just over five minutes. Here, choogling drums and congas meet organ, flute, and mono synth as the brass and saxes underscore each of Taylors and the chorus lines in unison. The feel is akin to Wars early sounds grafted onto Bob Marleys "Exodus." The flute and double-time-breaking drums add a sultry Philly soul component to the insistent groove. Closer "Feeling" is introduced by a breakbeat snare and tom-tom swirling around one another until a dominant rhythm is established. A pulsing organ adds heft, while flute, reeds, and brass accent and fill spaces under Taylors gritty singing. Guitars and basslines emerge from the bottom of the mix and gel with the upmixed drum kit, offering an unshakeable polyrhythmic foundation in soulful Afro-funk. The feel of Ebo Taylor Jazz Is Dead 022 is loose, free, and joyous, and highlights this generous spirit with excellent songs and virtuosic musicianship. ~ Thom Jurek
