Much of the self-titled 1999 debut by Atlanta's Floraline sounds like it could have been released in the mid-'80s by such British indie labels as Cherry Red or 4AD. But where many of those '80s bands were-truth be told-essentially getting by on wispy atmosphere, Floraline matches this gentle ambience to strong pop hooks and memorable choruses in such substantial songs as "I Should Say" and "Just The Way."
The dreamy "I Forgot" takes a page from St. Etienne or Air, with Linda Sharp's wonderful jazz-inflected voice and a lovely flugelhorn solo floating above Abe Burgess and Darren Tablan's billows of keyboards. Floraline may not be the most original band in the world-along with the aforementioned, one can recognize hints of Ivy, Komeda, and the poppier side of Stereolab-but the group does what it does so remarkably well that complaints about derivativeness sound churlish.
