All of Maxine Sullivan's recordings from 1944-1949 are on this single CD; she would only record two songs during the 1950-1954 period before making some full-length records in 1955. This reissue is more complete than the previous Tono recording that covered the same period, for it adds nine additional cuts. The previous 18 numbers find Sullivan in the studios with a couple of groups that utilize string sections and Larry Johnson's Orchestra, and, best of all, six swinging numbers with pianist Ellis Larkins' trio. The "new" cuts feature Sullivan with the Teddy Wilson Sextet, Benny Carter's big band, and on the radio with backing by Jimmie Lunceford's Orchestra. Although these recordings overall did not sell that well, the appealing singer (who interprets lyrics fairly straight but with a solid sense of swing) was very much in her prime, as can be heard on such numbers as "Every Time We Say Goodbye," "Mad About the Boy," "Skylark," "Taking My Time," "Legalize My Name," and remakes of "Loch Lomond" and "If I Had a Ribbon Bow." Recommended. ~ Scott Yanow
