Everything Is Wrong: The DJ Mix Album is essentially an album showing off the turntable skills of the tremendously successful techno artist Moby. However, the album is distinctive as a DJ mix album since the source material is entirely his own. The double-album Everything Is Wrong: The DJ Mix Album is made up almost entirely of compositions from Moby's critically acclaimed 1995 release Everything Is Wrong (the one exception is "Move," which appeared in its original form on the EP of the same name), and Moby re-shapes, re-works, and remixes the material into a continuous mix of techno heaven. The DJ Mix Album is divided into two parts; the first disc is the self-explanatory "Hard Techno/Joyous Anthems/Quiet Ambience." This first part starts off with the quiet piece "First Cool Hive" before jumping into the joyous exuberance of Moby's classic "Feeling So Real," and the music then takes a long journey to the dancefloor and back again. The way the aforementioned "Move" is seamlessly mixed into the club anthem "Everytime You Touch Me" is absolutely breathtaking. Disc one eventually comes full circle, ending with the soothing "Everything Is Wrong." Disc two, dubbed "New York Hard House/Groovy Acid/Melodic Trance," continues in much the same vein. Though some remixing is handled by the likes of Josh Wink and Westbam, Everything Is Wrong: The DJ Mix Album is almost entirely the work of Moby. He composed almost every single note, performed every instrument, and mixed the album himself using two turntables and a mixer. Throughout his career, Moby has successfully overcome the daunting challenge of humanizing techno music, putting a face to the relative anonymity of most artists of the genre, and he has proven the artistic merit of techno by taking it into adventurous musical directions. Moby's talent and versatility was already intact on classic dance singles like "Go" and "I Feel It," and the Everything Is Wrong album proved Moby was a true artist. Moby, the artist, goes back to his club roots on Everything Is Wrong: The DJ Mix Album, and the result is a brilliant display of composition and skill. Highly recommended. ~ William Cooper
