OUT SPACED is a great find for Super Furry Animals fans. Here, many of the Welsh quintet's 1990s B-sides and rarities are collected. Where a lot of bands fill B-sides with inferior, throwaway material, the Super Furries are reliably eclectic and inventive enough to craft always-interesting takes on their blend of psychedelia, electronica, dance, punk, and hook-heavy power-pop.
The expletive-laced opener is a classic Super Furries tune, moving through a shimmering, reverb-heavy verse before launching into a guitar boogie for the sing-along chorus. The group then shifts to full-fledged electronica on the expansive "Dim Brys Dim Chwys", before kicking off "Smokin'", a funky rocker about the pleasures of herbal indulgence. A number of the songs are in Welsh, including the weird "Fix Idris", yet their mystery is balanced by the straightforward Ramones-esque blast of "Guacamole". OUT SPACED is probably not the place for newcomers to start exploring SFA's unique world, but it is a strong compilation and a must for devoted fans.|
