クラシックと現代音楽を新たな形で表現し続ける「Dream House Quartet」の最新アルバム

2018年に結成された「Dream House Quartet」に参加している、ピアノ・デュオのカティアとマリエル・ラベック姉妹、グラミー賞受賞のギタリストでアメリカのインディー・ロックバンド「The National」の創設メンバーであるブライス・デスナー、作曲家、ミュジシャンでプロデューサーのダヴィッド・シャルマンによるニュー・アルバム『Sonic Wires』が発売されます。

「Dream House Quartet」は数十年にわたる音楽の専門的知識を駆使し、クラシックと現代音楽を新たな形で表現し続け、先駆的な作曲家による革新的な委嘱作品や過去半世紀の重要な現代作品を演奏しています。このアルバムにはスティーヴ・ライヒ、フィリップ・グラス、ブライス・デスナー、ダヴィッド・シャルマン、スフィアン・スティーヴンス、キャロライン・ショウ、ティモ・アンドレス、デイヴィッド・ラング、アンナ・ソルヴァルドスドッティルの作品が収録されています。2024年11月に行われるツアーに合わせてのリリースとなります。

One has to hand it to Katia & Marielle Labeque. This sister piano duo has been at it since the 1970s with great success, and by now theyre well-loved, in many countries, and have earned the right to coast a bit. Instead, theyve sought out fresh programming and have worked with various younger musicians. Among these is the rock guitarist Bryce Dessner, of The National; the Labeque sisters first worked with him on the 2019 album El Chan, becoming some of the first collaborators on his orchestral scores. And one has to hand it to Dessner as well; his language as a classical composer continues to evolve here. He is still basically oriented toward pleasantly tonal, meditative pieces, but sample the spiky Nono Spirals; its a new development in his work. He also serves as an arranger, elegantly remaking works by Caroline Shaw, Philip Glass, and the pop-folk songwriter Sufjan Stevens for the rather unwieldy but interesting combination of two pianos and two guitars. One of the guitars is Dessners; the other is by producer and performer David Chalmin, who adds voice and judicious electronics. At the center of the program is Steve Reichs Electric Counterpoint, which stands in the background of almost all of this music, and no matter whose choice that was, it was a smart one. Almost without the listener realizing it, the Labeque sisters and Dessner have woven together an impressive variey of music in a convincing way, and the result is an album of which all involved can be proud. ~ James Manheim
