息子と共演、最愛の作曲家に捧げた伝説のピアニスト最後のアルバム

2024年3月23日、82歳で亡くなったイタリアの偉大なピアニスト、マウリツィオ・ポリーニ。このアルバムは2022年6月に彼が息子であるダニエレと共に録音したもので、ポリーニ最後の録音となりました。収録されているのはシューベルトの異なる側面を持つ3つのピアノ作品。ピアノ・ソナタ第18番、『楽興の時』、そして二人による初の連弾録音となった『4手のための幻想曲ヘ短調』です。この父と息子にとってシューベルトは特別な愛情を抱いた作曲家で、このアルバムは二人が心を込めて取り組んだプロジェクトでした。1828年、シューベルトが亡くなった年に作曲された哀愁に満ちた『幻想曲ヘ短調』を二人は初めて共に練習し、演奏しました。二世代の音楽家によって作られたアルバムは遺産であり、未来への希望の眼差しでもあります。録音はミュンヘンのヘルクレスザールで行われました。

This album, made in 2022 when Maurizio Pollini was 80, was planned as his last recording. It features his son, Daniele Pollini, but only one of the three Schubert works, the Fantasia in F minor for piano 4 hands, features both Pollinis, although the two have performed and recorded together at various times. This may indicate a desire to showcase the younger Pollini, who has had a respectable career but hasnt reached the Olympian heights of his father. In any event, Olympian is the word for Maurizio Pollinis performance of the Piano Sonata in G major, D. 894, and he is excellent in this mode, as always. His performance is notably fast, and he lets the remarkable rhythmic freedom of the first movement take care of itself. This is as it should be: Schubert was not Beethoven, and this sonata, even less than the three big later ones, doesnt need a strongly subjective performer presence. In the short Moments Musicaux, D. 780, Daniele Pollini is similarly neutral, even if one might have wished for a more distinctive profile from him. However, the final four-hands Fantasy delivers in terms of keeping the two voices separate (Daniele takes the primo part) while maintaining a unified flow. It was absolutely no surprise when this album made classical best-seller lists in the late autumn of 2024, and it certainly serves as a reminder of the greatness of Maurizio Pollini. ~ James Manheim
