They were "new wave" before there was a new wave. Sparks brought a healthy helping of humor, wit and irony to rock 'n' roll. The Mael brothers now have a tribute album...well, sort of. The unofficial word is that they couldn't find enough people to participate in a tribute recording so they made one to themselves. Hard to believe, but maybe everyone but Jimmy Somerville was afraid to compete with Russell Mael's munchkin-on-helium vocals. So Sparks re-made their own songs, adding orchestration and turning up the camp to stratospheric heights, sounding like Kurt Weill on nitrous oxide. And yes, Erasure and Faith No More did contribute to this record, but what's particularly impressive about this collection is all the great songs that AREN'T here--enough to fill another tribute. And what about that beefcake cover photo? Is it real or is it Photoshop? You decide.|
