The TANK GIRL soundtrack neatly sums up punk and post-punk's influences on pop culture circa 1995. Inspired by a comic book of the same name, the movie and the album use a punk aesthetic to create a diverse-yet-specific mood, allowing the ambient caress of Portishead to mingle with the aggresive rap of Ice-T, and make it all work together.
Courtney Love was the soundtrack's musical director, and her sense of detail can not be ignored. The artists chosen to bring TANK GIRL's world to life are as much emblems of 1995's rock climate as of the fantastic world of Tank Girl herself. As a character, Tank Girl combines the clever, childish brattiness of Bjork's "Army Of Me" and the angry, take-no-prisoners attitude of L7's "Shove." Her world is an eerie, apocalyptic mess that sounds like the creepy steel guitar intro to Hole's "Drown Soda," but one that also has room for the charm of Paul Westerberg and Joan Jett's version of Cole Porter's "Let's Do It." And it is in balancing just such dichotomies that the TANK GIRL soundtrack succeeds, evoking the essence of the mid-'90s pop existence every bit as much as of the movie that spawned it.

Tank Girl was a gaudy bomb at the box office, but the soundtrack is much better than the film. Compiled by Courtney Love -- Hole's adequate "Drown Soda" is included on the album -- the soundtrack contains first-rate selections by Bjork ("Army of Me") and Weiland of Stone Temple Pilots' side-project, the Magnificent Bastards ("Mockingbird Girl"). Not all of the soundtrack is quite as solid, but it is an enjoyable slice of mid-'90s alternative rock. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
