THIS IS JAZZ: TONY BENNETT is a collection of songs that Bennett recorded between the years 1954 through 1967, an era which coincides almost exactly with the ascendancy of rock & roll. During this time, Bennett emphasized jazz, and helped to bolster the careers of many legendary jazzmen who were adversely affected by the rock juggernaut. The list of players on these songs reads like a veritable who's who in jazz: Stan Getz, Herbie Hancock, Elvin Jones, the Count Basie Orchestra and Zoot Sims are just a few of the luminaries. With this kind of support, naturally the performances are uniformly top-notch.
Throughout the record, Bennett demonstrates his natural gifts: his gritty but mellifluous voice, elegant phrasing, and the ability to convey the complex emotions behind the lyrics. Among the many highlights is "When Lights Are Low," justly regarded as one of Bennett's great ballads. "Dancing in the Dark" really swings, as does "Crazy Rhythm," driven by Chico Hamilton's furious drumming. And the irresistible "Let's Face the Music and Dance" features a flute section that might please Bennett's new generation of MTV-age fans, as it sounds like something Austin Powers might dance to.
