サウス・ロンドンを拠点に活動するヴォーカリスト/マルチ・インストゥルメンタリスト/プロデューサーのウー・ルー。
ブラック・ミディのドラマー、モーガン・シンプソンが参加した楽曲を含め、これまでリリースしたシングルがいずれも高い評価を受け、Fader、Mojo、Crack、Quietusといった主要メディアが絶賛するなど、注目を集めている。勢いに乗るUKバンド・シーンとも密に交流しながら、独自のスタイルでUKの新たなオルタナティブ・ロックの潮流を巻き起こしつつある彼が、2022年のデビュー・アルバム『LOGGERHEAD』以来初となる最新EPを12インチでリリース。
本作について、ウー・ルーは次のように語っている。
「誰もが愛する人の前と後の人生を生きてきた。人生はいつも私たちを水の中に放り込むけど、泳げないなんてことは神話だといつも知っている。」と。
『Learning To Swim On Empty』は、ヴォーカリストでありミュージシャンでもある彼が、これまで以上に深く潜り込み、これまでで最もハートフルで親密な楽曲を生み出し、その過程でサウンドの幅を広げている。このEPは、ブリクストンでの成長、死と悲しみ、再生、そして深い淵に放り込まれたときの沈むか泳ぐかの感覚にインスパイアされた、一連の日記のような作品となっている。EPのラストは、詩人のロハン・アインデと受賞作家でロンドンの元青少年桂冠詩人のカレブ・フェミによるスポークン・ワード・パフォーマンスで締めくくられる。

Wu-Lu followed the raging and otherwise on-edge Loggerhead with this comparatively pensive EP. Its as deliberate in construction as any full-length designed as a capital-s statement. Poets Rohan Ayinde and Caleb Femi respectively open and close with experiential reflections on coming of age -- not just growing up, but adapting and surviving in spite of unfavorable odds. "Daylight Song," appropriately chosen as the lead single, is a wary but determined trudge with a touch of mournful cello. Strings elsewhere lift not just the more hip-hop and motivational "Blunted Strings" ("Whats life really when youre on the fence?") but also the uneasy and self-critical "Last Night with You" and the consoling "Mount Ash" (incorporating a monologue of random childhood recollections). Second only to "Daylight Song" is "Sinner," an anthem of self-determination fortified by a bassline as rich as any on Loggerhead. This isnt merely a stopgap before Wu-Lus second album. ~ Andy Kellman
