Everything Squared

ポスト・ロックの誕生にも大きな影響を与えた電子音響系バンドのパイオニア、Seefeelが13年ぶりとなる新作を〈WARP RECORDS〉からリリース!!

Seefeelは1992年にロンドンで結成され、My Bloody ValentineやSpacemen 3のようなシューゲイザー・サウンドを制作していたが、当時バンドの大ファンを公言していたAphex Twinが彼らの初期トラック「Time To Find Me」のリミックスを提供するなど、徐々にエレクトロニック・ミュージックの世界へ傾倒して行った。
インディー・ロックとアンビエント・テクノの要素を融合させた独自のスタイルは大きな話題となり、イギリスの音楽誌『The Wire』から"ポスト・ロック"という呼名を与えられたバンドの一つとしても知られている。そんな彼らが13年ぶりに最新アルバム『Everything Squared』を〈Warp Records〉からリリースする!この作品は、彼らのトレードマークであるサウンドを現代的に進化させた6曲入りのミニアルバム。
Mark CliffordとSarah Peacockの2人が主に作曲と演奏を担当し、2010年のアルバム『Seefeel』をリリースした時期にメンバーだったシゲル・イシハラ(DJスコッチ・エッグ)もベースで2曲に参加。マスタリングはミニマル・ダブの大御所エンジニア、PoleことStefan Betke、デザインはThe Designers RepublicのIan Andersonが担当。

Everything Squared might seem tentative as a return. Seefeels first set of new compositions in 13 years is well short of half an hour in duration, but leader Mark Clifford indicated that its a drop in a constantly active ocean of sound; the EP is evidently more like a modest reintroduction. Excepting archival releases, Seefeel left off with a bristly and jagged self-titled album that suggested traversal of harsher terrain on the horizon. Instead, washes of static are rare here, and though ominous percussive judders fill fifth and last tracks "Hooked Paw" and "End of Here," this largely contemporizes the gentler aspects of the groups 1990s output. A link to the past is signaled from the start by Sarah Peacocks wordless, pacifying chirrups and Shigeru Ishiharas slow-motion dubwise bass. Some of these tracks themselves bear connections, like when the glimmering motif from particularly woozy second track "Multifolds" reappears in the crunching "Antiskeptic." Its sensations of euphoria faintly infected by those of alluring unease, Everything Squared is nearly as engrossing as anything from the groups past. ~ Andy Kellman
